According to Gospels, Jesus’ first miracle was turning water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana. (The point of this favor was water wasn’t safe to drink and the alcohol in wine works like an antibiotic to kill intestinal bacteria.) Familiar with his own Jewish tradition, Jesus celebrated the Last Supper, a Passover Seder, with wine, which then became the Eucharist ritual, the wine being a covenant with his sacrificial blood. Because Spanish missionaries needed grapes to ferment for this ritual, we enjoy the fruits of a thriving wine industry in California.
