In the Bible, the Pharisees were self-righteous and hypocritical. They despised anyone who did not meet their standard of legalistic religion. They were full of what Haas calls “religiously transmitted diseases,” which he says infect today’s church. What’s sad is that most people who are infected don’t realize it. But they’re responsible for some of today’s negative images of the church.
