Stations of the Cross

Pilgrimage

Christians marked and reverenced places in Jerusalem associated with Jesus' last days. In the fourth century, the Emperor Constantine had churches built on some of them - the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, for example, on the site of Jesus' tomb. Pilgrims braved the difficulties of travel to visit these sites, praying and chanting psalms. Some of these pilgrims recreated the experience when they returned home.
