Fifty years ago, the Revolution in Cuba didn’t just expel the U.S.-friendly dictatorship; it also declared the state atheist and kicked out the Catholic Church. Recent years have seen more openness to faith, the range of which reflects Cuba’s incredible cultural diversity.

During my recent trip, I found a tragically stagnant government and economy, but a people whose stubborn ingenuity and creativity prevail.
