The Western or Wailing Wall in Jerusalem was built by Herod in 20 B.C. It is the last retaining wall supporting the Temple Mount and was also the closest that the Jews were allowed to be where the ancient Temple of Jerusalem once stood in the aftermath of the Second Temple (70 A.D.). The Jews were not allowed to enter Jerusalem until the Byzantine period, but were limited a yearly visit on the anniversary of the Temple’s demise. The Jews would weep over the destruction of the Temple and it became the “Wailing Wall”.
