In 2002, Gore Verbinski remade the popular Japanese horror film The Ring. Naomi Watts stars in the film and convinces many that she is cursed by the mysterious videotape that curses everyone who watches it. The success of The Ring opened the door for Americans to remake other Japanese horror flicks such as The Grudge and Dark Water. The film also influenced a sequel, The Ring 2, to be released.

Bravo even included The Ring as number 20 in their top 100 Scariest Movie Moments. Several critics note The Ring as one of the most scariest horror films of all time.
