In the past, the Directors Guild award winner nearly always won the Oscar and his (or, in the case of Kathryn Bigelow, her) movie won Best Picture. But now that there are nine nominees for Best Picture and only five for Best Director and most knowledgable observers think that it was a mistake not to nominate Kathryn Bigelow ("Zero Dark Thirty") and Ben Affleck ("Argo"), there may be a split this year.
