In February 1989, Hepburn made a trip to Mexico and Central America. While in Mexico, she spent a day touring a small village, visiting with families and attending a celebration for a new water spigot. She helped to immunize children and inform mothers about oral rehydration treatment.
Following her visit to Mexico, Hepburn toured Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatamala to help launch UNICEF's State of the World's Children report and to promote breastfeeding. The residents of all three countries welcomed Hepburn with open arms.
