Just before 400 A.D. St. Augustine of Hippo wrote 13 autobiographical books that detailed the evolution of his faith. In Confessions, Augustine largely regrets his former sins. From stealing to fornication to dabbling in astrology, Augustine creates a path from a dark past to a bright future where his faith in the Bible grows through study and meditation. Confessions set the tone for future Christian writers and showed its readers how to bare their souls.
