The inspiration and lasting legacy that J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings trilogy has left upon the world since its publication in 1955 can be seen in one line from this, the final book.

Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee have travelled leagues to throw the one ring into the fires of Mount Doom and thereby end the power and destructive rein of Sauron. As they struggle up the slope, Frodo collapses, fully exhausted and near death. It’s then that his faithful friend comes to his aid.  “Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can’t carry [the ring] for you, but I can carry you!” Sam then lifts up his withered friend and carries him the rest of the way.

This picture of courage, strength, and friendship is at the true heart of why this series has endured for over half a century. The epic adventure, thrilling battles, and spellbinding fantasy have all had a part in its lasting appeal, but it’s the core tale of friendship and loyalty against all odds that has made The Lord of the Rings an inspiration to millions of readers ages 9 to 99.
