You can look online and find hundreds upon hundreds of articles on how men should look to Jesus to learn how to love their wives; however wives can do the same thing. The way Jesus loved during His time on earth and the way He shows love still today are great examples to follow. Jesus loves your husband unconditionally and without doubt, and as wives we should strive to do the same.

The most relationship you will ever have in your life is with Jesus Christ, and how you build that relationship up will help you navigate your other relationships too. Your Christian husband should be number two at all times. Here are the lessons you can learn from Jesus on how to love your husband fully.

Don’t Put Yourself First

You have heard that Jesus should be the most important person in your life and that your husband should come second. One temptation that almost all people fall into, both wives and husbands, is putting themselves first. When a couple does this, they reject everything they pledged to each other during their wedding vows. They throw the promises they made to each other out the door and put their marriage in jeopardy.

Jesus never put Himself first. He showed love to the world knowing He would have to make huge sacrifices that would be painful, because that is what true love is. God puts your husband first in everything that He does, and you should learn to do the same. This means submitting your own personal and selfish desires when necessary.

Promise Forever

Hebrews 13:5 says “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Jesus made this promise, and many others, in the Bible that He has never gone back on. When Jesus made promises to your husband, He did so knowing that they would be everlasting. He was not going to break that bind.

When you promised your husband the vows you made on your wedding day, you should have been going into it understanding promises the way Jesus does. When you tell your husband you love him, that you will never leave him, and that you are staying in the marriage for the long haul, you should mean it with every part of your heart. God doesn’t go back on His promises, so you shouldn’t either.

Be Gentle

When you are broken, sad, and hurt, you know you can find comfort in Jesus Christ. The Bible says in Psalms 147:3, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” When your husband is going through a tough period in life, as a Christian he can pray, meditate, and come to Jesus for hope and light. Men tend to respond to hurt with pain and anger, but even then Jesus is showing Him kindness and gentleness.

When your husband is going through problems, acting unloveable, or feeling completely broken, remember to respond to his hurt with gentleness. That means providing a listening ear if he needs it, showing him comfort, or even just making his favorite dinner. Do whatever it takes to lift him up.

Encourage Him to Be His Best

When you’re in a happy, healthy marriage, you want to see your spouse live up to their fullest potential. Point out the strengths you see in your husband to help build him up, and always encourage him to follow his dreams. Jesus encourages us to work our hardest to become the best version of ourselves, because He has great aspirations for us. He wants to see us grow because He loves us.

Remember, everyone has unique talents and passions, and the Bible says that we should use these gifts to honor God. 1 Corinthians 12:5-6 encourages us to find our own ways of serving the Lord: “There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.”

Love the Flaws

Jesus is willing to love your husband despite his sins, flaws, and missteps. Romans 5:8 says “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Even when your husband is at his absolute worst and the furthest from the faith, Jesus is showing Him unconditional love.

As a wife are you doing the same? When your husband is annoying you, acting inconsiderate, clearly in the wrong or being unlovable, are you still showing him that you are there 100 percent? It is much easier said than done, especially when your emotions are running high. However it is something we must try and copy. We can renew our love for our husbands by connecting with God and asking for His assistance. God can fill us up again and remind us exactly why we are dedicated to our marriages, even when things get messy.

First John 4:10-11 says: “This is the kind of love we are talking about – not that we once upon a time loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they’ve done to our relationship with God. My dear, dear friends, if God loved us like this, we certainly ought to love each other.” We can learn so much from the Bible about how to love our husbands unconditionally and like Jesus does. Follow Jesus’ example and you will have a marriage that is strong, healthy and thriving.
