The word Chakra comes from a Sanskrit word that means “wheel” or “circle.” Chakras are energy centers in our body that look like spinning wheels. When our chakras are properly balanced, we feel healthy and happy. Picture seven spinning wheels in the colors of the rainbow starting at your spine and moving along your back to the top of your head. Our chakras are like body guards. They allow certain energy in and keep negative energy out. If we allow holes in our aura – from lack of sleep, too much anger, drinking too much or other excessive behavior – then we disempower these body guards. But if we have a strong aura, our chakras can help keep us healthy, happy and tuned in to our intuition.

Solar Plexus Chakra

You have your own built-in lie detector. It sits in your gut where your third chakra is. This chakra is called the Solar Plexus Chakra. It sits a few inches above your navel. When people cross their arms in front of their chest, they are subconsciously covering this chakra and thereby protecting themselves. Its color is yellow. The Solar Plexus Chakra deals with issues of personal power, courage and confidence. Fear of authority, low self-esteem and fears of being alone are stored here. People who tend to put on weight in this area of their body often do so to feel protected and safe.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is where our Clairsentient abilities resides. When people say things like, “I just have a feeling about it” or “My gut says something isn’t right” or “I sense that something is off about this situation,” that is their clairsentient ability working through the Solar Plexus Chakra. Everyone has this ability, but like any muscle you can make it stronger by listening to your gut and following your instincts. Trust your first impressions about people. Follow your inner compass when you’re lost. If you’re getting a good feeling about a job or a bad feeling about a situation, trust it. The more you do so, the stronger this intuitive ability will get.

Physically, hula hooping and dancing are great for this chakra as is walking and running. Chanting the mantra Ram helps to balance it. Heart Chakra

One of the most important chakras for awakening intuitive abilities is the Heart Chakra which sits in the middle of our chest; its color is green. This is the chakra that deals with love and all our relationships, not just romantic ones. Any issues that we have with family members, co-workers, bosses, friends, neighbors and our romantic partners gets stored here. This important chakra is called the Bridge Chakra because it connects the physical chakras (root, sacral and solar plexus) with the spiritual chakras (throat, third eye and crown). If this chakra is blocked, nothing is going through. Anger, jealousy, resentment and lack of self-love are the biggest blocks to this chakra working for you. Work on loving yourself and forgiving others while affirming “all my relationships are healthy, loving and happy.”

Chanting the mantra “Yam” helps to awaken and clear this chakra. Diffusing or inhaling Rose Oil helps to heal this center. Physically, walking and swimming are great for the heart chakra. Recommended crystals include Green Aventurine, Malachite, Emerald, Rose Quartz, and Watermelon Tourmaline.

Throat Chakra

The gift of Clairaudience – the ability to hear supernaturally – is centered in the Throat Chakra. You might be Clairaudient if you’ve ever heard your name called when you’re in your home alone or if songs randomly pop into your head. People who are musically gifted often have strong Clairaudient abilities. The Throat Chakra sits at the base of the neck and its color is sky blue. This is the center of communication and reflects one’s ability to speak the truth. Attributes covered here include writing, public speaking, acting, singing, and teaching. You can tell this center is overactive if you find yourself talking too much, speaking loudly, lying or imposing your views on others. When the throat chakra is underactive, you might experience a fear of speaking your mind. Physically, you might get a lot of sore throats and colds.

To heal and balance this chakra, try singing, humming, whistling and affirming “I always speak my truth.” Chanting the mantra “Ham” during meditation is a great way to strengthen your Clairaudience. Third Eye Chakra

The ability to see psychically is called Clairvoyance and resides in the Third Eye Chakra which sits in the center of your forehead. Its color is indigo. To balance and heal this chakra, meditate and read books on spirituality. Affirm daily, “I trust myself and follow my inner guidance.” Physically, connecting with nature is great for this chakra. Practice present moment awareness. Try chanting the mantra “Om.” Diffuse or inhale Lavender Oil to help awaken Clairvoyance. Recommended crystals include Sodalite, Labradorite, Azurite and Lapis Lazuli.

Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra sits half in and half out of the top of our head. Its color is purple and it deals with our connection to the divine. If someone feels angry about a religion or experiences an inability to trust faith, their crown chakra is overactive. When we experience an inability to believe in anything, a fear of opening up to the mystery of the unknown and distrust of others who do believe, then this center gets closed down. To balance this chakra, affirm “I trust in the universe.” In order to awaken our natural intuitive abilities, we must have a strong foundation of faith and a comfortable connection with our higher power. It is through the Crown Chakra that all intuitive information enters into our energy. If this Chakra is closed or diminished in any way, we won’t be able to align with our divine communication.

You can also chant the mantra “Om” to activate the Crown Chakra. Inhale or diffuse Frankincense Oil. Recommended crystals include Sugilite, Amethyst, and Lepidolite.
