JoAnne sat in my office seeking some intuitive insight about her three-year old daughter, Kayla. JoAnne had brought her to the pediatrician because she was concerned that Kayla had virtually stopped eating, was unusually tired and had occasional bouts of diarrhea. The doctor had reassured her that this was normal and suggested she try a few days of a bland diet and call again if this continued to be an issue.

JoAnne said, “I’m usually not a worry wart about this kind of thing. Yet I feel that my gut is telling me something is wrong. It’s not just a normal three-year-old girl thing. I can’t seem to let it go.” I encouraged JoAnne to trust her intuition and get a second opinion.

The next time I heard from her she reported that she had indeed followed up on her hunch. Kayla had been diagnosed with celiac disease. She was rapidly improving after being placed on a gluten-free diet. “It’s a difficult diagnosis because of the food restrictions. But I feel like I have my daughter back! My mother’s intuition steered me in the right direction. I’m glad I listened to it!”

What Is Intuition?

Intuition is a rich resource for acquiring knowledge about yourself and the world around you. It offers profound guidance that allows you to make the best choices for yourself and your family. When you listen to intuition and follow its wisdom you’ll be led to a life that is abundant, successful and full of limitless possibilities. Intuition is a connection to your soul, a vehicle for God to communicate with you. When you ask your intuition for help or insight, you are tapping into your Higher Power and seeking its wise guidance. I refer to it as "Divine Intuition."

Intuition comes in many forms. It communicates in different ways to each of us. As in JoAnne’s case, “Mother’s Intuition” is especially important in keeping our kids safe, healthy and out of trouble. Always best to heed its wisdom!

Following are some of the ways intuition makes itself known.

Emotions - Intuitive information often comes through your feelings or emotions. You may simply “feel right” about a certain course of action. Or you might experience a sense of distrust about an individual or situation. It’s so important to act on this even when it doesn’t make a lot of logical sense. Intuition can come from information just below the conscious level. You may know something, but not know how you know it.

Inner Voice - Many people report a "still, quiet, inner voice." Your intuition will always communicate with you in a compassionate, loving manner that is perceptibly different from your normal inner chatter. Asking your intuition questions will often prompt this inner voice response. For example:

“What’s the best way to help my child get to sleep at night?”

“How can I help him increase his self-confidence?”

“What should I know about my daughter’s sleep-away camp?”

Physical sensations - We call such sensations a “gut feeling.” You might find that your body feels heavy if a decision you’ve made is wrong. Your body may feel light or experience "chills" if it is the correct path for you and your child.

Dreams - You can receive a wealth of guidance when you learn to ask for intuitive insight from your dreams. Write a question similar to the ones above. Ask it in your mind as you drift off to sleep. Keep a paper and pen handy and write down any answers or fragments of dreams upon awakening.

Instant knowing - You may receive a sudden flash of understanding. The answer wasn’t there and the next moment it is! We often refer to this as an “Aha Moment.” Sometimes these come when you least expect them. Such as when you’re walking your child to the school bus, washing the dishes, driving to work or taking a shower.

">

Symbols - Intuition often comes to us in symbolic images. It is often said that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” You might receive a symbolic impression of a rocky road if you choose “Path A.” If you choose the alternative “Path B,” you may see a clear, smooth path in your mind’s eye.

How Can You Tap Into It?

Meditation is helpful. However, most of us moms don’t have the leisure of sitting down to meditate for 20-30 minutes. Try sitting quietly for one to five minutes, taking slow deep breaths. If that still feels difficult for you, take a quiet walk by yourself.

We often think of intuition as coming unbidden. However, we can get really helpful information from our intuition when we ask open-ended questions similar to the ones above. Try phrasing it like, “How can I…(help my child, be happier, find a wonderful new job?). Or simply, “What is the right next step?”

Intuitive answers don’t usually come immediately. They come when you least expect them!

What Are Some Easy Techniques?

I have a lot of video intuition techniques on my website.

Here’s a quick one to try:

If a decision or idea feels heavy, boring or draining, that’s your intuition telling you to move away from that choice or not make it in the first place.

If a decision or idea feels exciting, interesting, or has energy, that’s your intuition telling you to go in that direction. That way points you to more success and happiness!

Intuition is always encouraging you to open up, to try something new, and to be the best you can be. It consistently points the way to success. We all want a sure thing, a guarantee that the risk we take will work out okay. But life isn't like that. It requires that you develop faith and courage so you can grow big enough emotionally and spiritually to live your dreams and be a happy mom.
