At the time, Denzel Washington’s career had not taken off. In fact a non-fulfilling film experience in Hollywood caused him to return home to New York to live with his mom. How embarrassing, he thought. He did get a small role in a New York production, and there he spotted a gorgeous New York stage performer on the set. He didn’t really have the courage to talk with her. Later, he attended a party at someone’s home, and there, wearing a purple dress with stripes, was that girl, Pauletta. They began an engaging conversation. Denzel was enthralled with her. He didn’t have the gumption to exchange phone numbers because, after all, he was living with his mom. But he kicked himself all the way home because now he had no way to reach her. The next day someone told him about an obscure off-Broadway play and offered him a ticket. He arrived late and the curtain had already gone up.

When the lights went up for intermission, Denzel looked to his right and there she was. All during the first act, Pauletta had been sitting right there next to him. The conversation that ensued that time never ended. And according to Pauletta: “That was a sign from heaven.”
