My problem isn't food, it's beer. I work at a restaurant, and after work every night, we drink a few beers. Before I know it, I have had 5 or 6 beers! On the nights that I don't work, I don't drink anything. I wish that there was a magic pill that I could take to take away the cravings for the beer. What can I do? I have found there’s always something deeper underneath a craving or habit. Forgive me for presuming, but consider a different, fresh perspective. I suspect you are looking for two things in drinking the beer after working every night: relaxation and friendship. You probably have worked incredibly hard and you need to unwind. You also want to just be with friends. (You shared a big part of the mystery when you wrote you only do this connected with work). Try other ways to relax – go for a slow walk with your friends, or go bowling, or to a yoga or meditation class. But I realize you and your friends may not be the "yoga and meditation" type. So go to a park and hang out, or to the movies. There are lots of ways to relax together that don't involve beer. Could it be you drink because it’s free at work? Try just cutting it in half. Have only 2 or 3 beers, and drink them very very slowly. Add them into your overall "Joy of Weight Loss Eating Plan" for the day as grains (or carbohydrates). Not the healthiest activity, drinking, but have less bread, rice, pasta, etc., if you’re unable (or unwilling) to totally abstain. If it’s uncontrollable – get to an AA meeting, and find some new friends there. There’s likely a lot more to this than I have space to write about here. Let this be your invitation to explore your depths, in order to solve the mystery.
