Do I have to join a gym? I believe in using my body to feel good and enjoy myself. But in my view there are no rules about how or where I do it. This can be at home, in a gym, outside on the street, or in a kids’ playground. I recommend to people that they do what they liked as kids, and modify it to their own level of comfort. Swing on swings, dance, play with sand, walk around with friends, toss some balls. I also know many people enjoy being active with others: sign up for a recreation class such as yoga, water aerobics, Tai Chi, racquetball or squash, boxing, or ballroom or jazz dancing. These things don’t have to be done at expensive gyms. They can be done outdoors, at parks, school playgrounds, and recreation centers. The key is to do things you enjoy so you’ll keep on doing them regularly. Before signing up for a gym membership, try a few sample, guest sessions. Or work with a personal trainer or coach for a time or two, and see if the chemistry is right. Don’t waste piles of cash being one of the many that buy long-term gym memberships with good intentions, go a few times, hate it, and never go back.
