5 Ways to Honor Our Veterans

The topic of our military and veterans has been a major theme during any given election season. It usually is a hot button topic on how to take care of them better, and our failure to make sure they are provided for. Whatever narrative is being used during a political campaign, we would not have the freedoms (like voting) if it was not for the brave people who protected our liberties daily. For many, these rights seem to be increasingly stripped away. No matter what is going on in America, we can’t ignore the soldiers who sacrificed for us. From the Revolutionary War under George Washington and those who serve today--they must be honored. Veterans need more than a holiday--they need to be shown appreciation all year. There are over 18 million veterans in the U.S., and we can honor our military men and women today by making small sacrifices to help them now and moving forward. Here are 5 ways to honor our veterans.

Never Forget History

History should never be forgotten, and that is the reason to visit a military cemetery. The National Cemetery Administration has 135 national cemeteries in the U.S., which is operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs. There is nothing more sobering than visiting these cemeteries, and viewing all the people that died for our country, and honor those who have served. Bring flowers for the unmarked gravestone, and remain still. This is a good reminder and lesson for children to learn to honor those before us, and who served in the military and who have helped make this country great. You can explain to kids what freedom means, and how it would be if the military didn’t protect, or fight for the country and our freedoms.
