Pendulums

A pendulum is a small object tied to a string or chain that is used for simple divination. They have been used throughout history to locate water, gold, gems and even hidden bombs during WWII. The pendulum allows you to connect to your higher self and your subconscious.

Most pendulums found in metaphysical stores today are made from some kind of crystal on a chain.

Pendulums give the querent “yes”, “no” and “maybe/don’t know” answers. You hold the pendulum in your hand and ask it to show you yes. It will start to swing up and down or left to right. Once you know how a ‘yes’ answer swings, then you ask it to show you no. You can also create a grid that has the words yes, no, maybe and not now written on it and hold the pendulum over the grid to receive guidance.

Crystals have been used throughout the ages as talismans for protection, adornments in temples, and symbols of loyalty in love. Crystals are used in watches and computers, but they can also be used to jump start your intuition. Crystals work within our auric fields and serve as a conduit for energy flow. You can use crystals to enhance your meditation practice. Lapis Lazuli, Amethyst or Clear Quartz are wonderful for meditation. Crystal healers teach that when we wear or carry crystals with us, they sync with our energetic fields and help us to awaken to our intuition.

Crystal scrying is an ancient technique that dates back almost 5,000 years. It involves starting into a crystal allowing one to access the unconscious mind and higher levels of intuition. Queen Elizabeth’s I’s astrologer John Dee used an Obsidian for scrying. Jean Dixon, who predicted John F. Kennedy’s assassination, used a clear crystal ball.

In addition to using crystals for meditation and scrying, they can also be used for creating manifesting grids. If you’re working on attracting more financial abundance, for example, you can create a grid with crystals that represent abundance such as green aventurine, citrine, moss agate and pyrite. Write an affirmation on a piece of paper such as “I am a magnet for financial abundance” and place it in the center of the grid. The crystals help charge the energy you’re sending out to the universe.

Oracle Cards

People have looked to answers with the cards for centuries. The tarot dates back to the 15th century and has been used throughout the ages to help people predict events. Noted psychologist Carl Jung used the tarot to help get in touch with archetypes. He believes the tarot was “an intuitive method that has the purpose of understanding the flow of life, possibly even predicting future events, as all events lending itself to the reading of the conditions of the present moment.” Today, there are oracle cards on everything from angels to animals. Even a normal deck of playing cards has its origins in the tarot with the suits representing the minor arcana cards from tarot. The Minor Arcana cards of the tarot are broken into Pentacles, Swords, Cups and Wands. In a deck of playing cards the Pentacles have become Diamonds, Wands are now Clubs, Swords are Spades and Cups are Hearts.

When using oracle cards, there are several spreads to choose from such as The Tree of Life or the Celtic Cross. One of the simpler ones to begin with is a Past, Present, Future reading where you simply shuffle the deck while thinking of your question and then pull three cards with the first representing the past, the second is the present and the third points to future outcomes. It’s an effective way to help us get out of our own way in order to get in touch with our higher self and inner guidance. A great way to learn how to use a deck of oracle cards is to simply ask each morning, “What do I need to know today?” and pick a card to symbolize your day.

The practice of throwing Runes dates back to the 1st century. Germanic tribes inscribed Italic alphabets on stones for divination purposes. Some believe the runes were given to the Norse by their god Odin. The Runes themselves are considered powerful symbols of forces in the cosmos. The origin of the word rune is rooted in both “letter” and “secret” and “mystery.”

You can consult the Runes for insight into a problem or to gain deeper understanding in your soul purpose. Runes typically come in a velvet pouch. A common way to use the Runes is to gently shake the bag while thinking of your question. Pull three Runes to represent the past, present and future. Alternately, you can pull three Runes to represent the problem, the challenge to the problem and the outcome.

There are several types of Runes to choose from. The Elder Futhark is the most common set of Runes you will find in stores. It’s a good beginner set, but there are also Cirth, Hungarian Runes, and Turkic runes. For the creative person, you can also make your own runes by carving the symbols on stones or writing them on paper.

When using divination tools, it’s very important to say a prayer or affirmation of intent before you do this work so you can protect your energy, set your boundaries and assure that you’re only working with positive energy. An example would be “I pray and intend that only positive energy surrounds this work so that I am led to answers meant for my highest good at this time.” Or “I call on my guardian angels and highest guides to assist me in seeking answers and inspiration in the light of love.”

The key with all these divination tools is that you’re using them to access your unconscious, your higher self, the calling of your heart which is where all the answers truly exist. As you begin to work with these tools, you will learn to trust yourself and your inner guidance. It is this inner trust, not the tools themselves, that will help you awaken and develop your intuition. These tools can help you ignite the seeker within and help you realize that you can be your own psychic.
