Limiting God’s power can be done in a myriad of ways. Not spending time with Him, pride, doubt, and sin are a few ways you limit His power in your life.
God is all-powerful and all-knowing. However, His power can be limited when you are not fully focused on Him. Being distracted by the world or struggling with pride can often cause you to limit God’s power in your life. While God is never weak, His power will not be at work in your life if you are always questioning Him or doubting His abilities.
The good news is that you don't have to continue to limit His power. Instead, you can choose to have faith in Him and to truly trust Him with your entire heart, mind, body, and soul. This will ensure God’s power shines through in every circumstance.
1. Not Praying Each Day
You limit God's power in your life by not praying to Him daily. Prayer is your direct line of communication to God. Refraining from praying will send the message that you don't need God. Choose to cease this practice and turn back to Him.
Paul instructs us to, “pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Praying continually will ensure you are not limiting God’s power in your life. Strive to pray to Him each day and spend quality time with Him. Don't neglect your time with Him, even if you are tight on time. Ensure you always make time to spend with Him in prayer and worship.
2. Refraining From Studying the Bible
How will you truly know God if you never study His Word? The Bible is the very Word of God, which means it contains the true accounts of God working in the world. In order to know Him, you have to read the Bible, study it, and apply it into your life. Without a knowledge of the Bible, you won't be able to truly know who God is or understand His working in the world.
Start reading your Bible every day. Allot time to read the Bible after you talk with Him in prayer. Even if you only have time for a chapter or a few passages, make sure you are reading the Bible every day. God’s power won't be limited in your life if you are studying His Word, getting to know Him better through His Word, and applying His Word into your life.
3. Thinking We Know Better Than God
Pride comes before the fall (Proverbs 16:18). God’s power will be hindered in your life if you think you know better than God. Maybe you think your plans are better than His own, so you stop following His direction in your life. This is dangerous as it could not only limit God’s power in your life, but also cause you to fall into sin.
God always knows better. He is the Creator of all things, including humanity. Choose to humble yourself before Him and He will lift you up (James 4:10). Ask the Lord to help you listen to Him and obey Him rather than trying to follow your own plans, desires, or wants.
4. Indulging in Sin
Sin causes endless problems in everyone's life. This is why it is important to steer clear of sin and follow the path of righteousness. Whenever you indulge in sin or live a sinful lifestyle, God’s power is limited. This is because you are no longer living in obedience to Him; instead, you have chosen the way of the sinful flesh.
If you have seen this taking place in your life, return to God with your entire heart. Malachi 3:7 records the words of God, “‘Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty.”
5. Doubting God
Doubt causes you to believe God cannot do amazing things in your life. Naturally, this causes God’s power to be limited in your life. Overcome doubt by trusting in God, even when it is hard. Ask the Lord to help your doubt decrease and your faith increase (Mark 9:24).
6. Following Others Instead of God
There are endless social media influencers today and many of them are Christian influencers. They share various personal insights or what their pastor taught them on Sunday. While these things can be nice, they don't need to be a substitute for your relationship with God. If you are following other people, such as influencers, more than you are following God, you are limiting His power in your life.
Although influencers can be hard to turn away from, it is something that you must do. Return to God today and faithfully follow Him. His power will be made more clear in your life when you follow Him with your entire heart.
7. Not Spending Time With Other Believers
God’s power is also limited when you don't spend time with other believers. Self-isolation will never work out in your favor. Make the choice to reach out to a friend today and spend time with them. God’s power will be revealed in your life when you make this change. God wants you to have community with others, not to isolate yourself (Hebrews 10:25).
God’s power can be limited in your life by not engaging in prayer, not studying the Bible, thinking you are superior to God, living a sinful lifestyle, doubting Him, following other people instead of God, and isolating yourself from others. Being aware of these signs will help you to stop limiting God’s power in your life.
