Sandy Eisenberg Sasso has been the rabbi of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck in Indianapolis since 1977. She is active in the arts, civic affairs, and interfaith communities, and has written and lectured on women and spirituality and the religious imagination in children. She was ordained from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia, received a Doctorate of Ministry from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, and holds honorary doctorates from DePauw and Butler Universities. Rabbi Sasso is the award-winning author of several acclaimed children’s books, including “God’s Paintbrush.” “But God Remembered: Stories of Women From Creation to the Promised Land” and “A Prayer for the Earth: The Story of Naamah, Noah’s Wife” both were selected as best books of the year by Publisher’s Weekly. All her books are published by Jewish Lights. She writes a monthly column in The Indianapolis Star, lectures on spirituality and children's literature at Christian Theological Seminary, and teaches religion and Judaism at Butler University. Rabbi Sasso was the first woman ordained from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and the first to serve a Conservative congregation together with her husband, Rabbi Dennis C. Sasso. She and her husband are the parents of two children, David and Debbie.
