Sometimes when trying to accomplish Big Goals, we are stopped in our tracks by the question, \u201cWhy me?\u201d\u00a0 Underlying that question is a whole host of mistaken beliefs that we can have about ourselves: Why me, when I\u2019m not smart enough?\u00a0 Why me, when I\u2019m not pretty or handsome enough?\u00a0 Why me, when I\u2019m not charismatic enough?\u00a0 All these beliefs add up to the one belief that prevents us from achieving our purpose in life \u2013 I can\u2019t<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019m not good enough.<\/em><\/p>\n

A friend of mine used to make fun of me whenever I said, \u201cI can\u2019t do that\u201d or \u201cI don\u2019t know how to do that.\u201d\u00a0 He would tell me, \u201cYou don\u2019t need a PhD in lightbulb changing in order to change a lightbulb.\u00a0 Just figure out what you want to do and do it<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 He was right.\u00a0 The only difference between people who achieve great things and those who don\u2019t is that the achievers don\u2019t waste their time worrying about whether they are qualified.\u00a0 They simply figure stuff out, plow ahead and do it.<\/p>\n

I was never an amazing student in high school.\u00a0 As a result, no one ever told me, \u201cWow!\u00a0 You are going to accomplish great things in life.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, most of the messages I got were, \u201cYou\u2019re OK<\/em>. \u201c Or, \u201cYou aren\u2019t as good as other people, but keep trying.\u201d\u00a0 Maybe I\u2019ve been delusional, but I\u2019ve spent my life ignoring these messages.\u00a0 Instead, I just plowed ahead.\u00a0 As a result, I ended up graduating from both college and law school.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had a rewarding legal career, I”ve travelled all over the world, and I have led a fairly interesting life, thus far.<\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m not suggesting that you be unrealistic about your abilities.\u00a0 We all are limited in some ways by our physical attributes and dispositions.\u00a0 For instance, I could never be in the WNBA.\u00a0 I am 5\u2019 6\u201d tall, and I hate it when anyone bumps into me.\u00a0 My personal nightmare would be to spend my days having tall women push me around while trying to throw a ball into a hoop.\u00a0 However, barring a career with the WNBA, I don\u2019t believe there are many things that I can\u2019t do, if I set my mind to them.<\/p>\n

At a certain point, you have to stop listening to the voices that tell you that you aren\u2019t good enough and start listening to God.\u00a0 God has endowed you with certain talents for a reason.\u00a0 God has inspired you to have certain aspirations for a reason.\u00a0 Your only job is to listen to that still small voice and use your unique talents to fulfill God\u2019s purpose for your life.<\/p>\n

I truly believe that every person has been placed on this earth by God to make it a better place.\u00a0 What is tragic is that there are so many people who fail to use their unique gifts for that purpose.\u00a0 They instead use their talents to harm others or for greed.\u00a0 Or they simply allow their gifts to go unused.\u00a0 Think about all the homeless shelters and prisons.\u00a0 They simply are huge repositories of individuals who\u2019ve failed to use their talents to serve society in the way that God intended.<\/p>\n

Each of us has a responsibility to ignore the voice that says, \u201cYou are not enough.\u201d\u00a0 You are enough.<\/em>\u00a0 And the answer to the question \u201cWhy me?\u201d is that God created you to be enough.\u00a0 You simply have to use your gifts to follow God\u2019s calling for your life and be of service to the world.<\/p>\n
