What&#8217;s even more<br \/>\nshocking is that we lose an average of 4 children each day and most of<br \/>\nthose children didn&#8217;t live to see their 4th birthday.&nbsp; According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrensdefense.org\/child-research-data-publications\/data\/marian-wright-edelman-child-watch-column\/economic-crisis-puts-children-at-risk.html\">Marian Wright Edelman, President of the Children&#8217;s Defense<br \/>\nFund<\/a>, as the economy continues to take its toll on families, crisis<br \/>\ncenters nationwide are seeing a sharp rise in child abuse and neglect<br \/>\ncases. <\/p>\n<p>I was an abused child. I remember feeling badly for my parents in their<br \/>\nfinancial struggle and forgiving them for their inability to cope.<br \/>\nSomehow I knew that they didn&#8217;t have the skills or the spiritual<br \/>\nfoundation to cope with their anger and frustration. I felt sorry for<br \/>\nthem. But I vowed never to repeat this vicious cycle with my own child<br \/>\nand I am so grateful to have honored this pact with myself. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nChildren greatly need and deserve to be protected regardless of the<br \/>\nlife challenges and circumstances of their parents. We can all make<br \/>\ndifference in our schools and communities by becoming aware of the<br \/>\nsigns and taking action when we suspect a child is being abused or<br \/>\nneglected: <br \/>\n1. Involve an authority. Never confront the parent directly. It could further endanger the child or possibly yourself. <\/p>\n<p>2. Contact Child Protective Services (CPS) through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childwelfare.gov\/pubs\/reslist\/rl_dsp.cfm?rs_id=5&amp;rate_chno=11-11172\">Child Welfare<br \/>\nInformation Gateway.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. If you are suddenly feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope with your<br \/>\nchild or children, or you suspect a child is being abused, contact the<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.childhelp.org\/about\/programs-and-services\/childhelp-national-child-abuse-hotline-1-800-4-a-child\">Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline<\/a> at 800-4-A-Child or visit their<br \/>\nwebsite. All calls to this center are confidential and anonymous. <\/p>\n<p>4.
