As our economic problems continue to grow, so too, do the number of people who are experiencing financial difficulties. Unfortunately, many  people are unable to cope with these challenges and often do not know where to turn for help. When this happens, people can fall into depression and experience feelings of hopelessness and despair.
<\/font>
In<\/font> response to the rising needs of Americans in financial crisis, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration took the initiative this week to increase financial support to suicide centers across the nation by over 1 million dollars. This was prompted by a rise in financially related suicide calls which indicates which is very concerning.<\/p>\n

Some of our readers have expressed their own fears and challenges recently and I want to make sure that all of you know where to go for help if you or someone you know is feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope. To be sure, these are challenging times for almost everyone but without question some people are more vulnerable than others.
<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font>It’s important that you know how valuable each and every one of you are. We all matter and deserve
\nhelp and support in finding our way through life’s challenges. If
\nwe can simply  allow ourselves to reach out, there are many resources of
\nsupport available to us. So, if someone you know is in despair, please reach out
\nto them and offer them this information so they can get the help and
\nsupport they need.<\/p>\n

Also, if you, or someone you know, are feeling depressed, hopeless or in despair, please reach out to one or more of these resources:<\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

    \n

  1. \n  Reach out to a friend who is a good listener.<\/font><\/li>\n

  2. \n  Contact a local minister or rabbi and ask for help.  
    <\/font><\/li>\n
  3.  
    \nThe Samaritans have created an incredible support system for
    \npeople in despair called “the befrienders.”<\/a> They can be reached 24
    \nhours a day for compassionate, non-judgemental emotional support. You
    \ncan speak confidentially with a volunteer on the phone, or e-mail them.<\/font><\/li>\n
  4.   You can also talk to a therapist online at Psych Central.<\/a><\/font><\/li>\n

  5. \n   There is an online depression support group called     “Walkers in
    \nDarkness”<\/a>  where you can connect with others who can offer support.<\/font><\/li>\n

  6. \n   If you are having suicidal thoughts or feelings, please call 1-800-SUICIDE.<\/font><\/li>\n

  7. \n    If you are a teenager in need of help, call     Covenant House<\/a> at 1-800-999-9999. <\/font><\/li>\n

  8. \nAs a community here on Beliefnet, I’d like to ask those of you who feel
    \nmoved to help others during this financial crisis to form a     Prayer
    \nCircle<\/a>. Together, we can pray for those in financial despair to receive
    \npersonal and financial help and support they greatly need and deserve.<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
