Not<br \/>\neverybody loves New York City. Some people can&#8217;t stand it. But they love some<br \/>\nother place and that&#8217;s the point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There&#8217;s a line in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollynear.com\/discography.html\">Holly Near<\/a> song that says (quoting from<br \/>\nmemory and perhaps imperfectly), &#8220;Kids are gonna love whom they damn well<br \/>\nplease.&#8221; The song is about extending understanding and acceptance to gay and<br \/>\nlesbian youth, but to me the line also says, &#8220;We&#8217;re all gonna love people (and<br \/>\nplaces and practices and principles) that we damn well please.&#8221; It&#8217;s the loving<br \/>\nitself that&#8217;s so good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I want to share with you something I wrote describing what I<br \/>\nlove about my adopted home. Let it spark your own thoughts about how you love<br \/>\nRocky Mountains or the heart of Dixie or Highway One or something else. Leave<br \/>\nyour comment about some place or person or practice or principle you love the<br \/>\nway I love the Big Apple. We can have a love fest. It&#8217;ll almost be like bringing<br \/>\nback the 60s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">Things I Love about NYC<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The energy and uplift I feel when I<br \/>\nwalk outside, or even just open the shades<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The architecture and the bridges<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"1 flower.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/133\/import\/1%20flower.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"float: left;margin: 0 20px 20px 0\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The dogs and the pigeons<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Fresh<span>\u00a0<\/span>flowers at the delis<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The writers&#8217; group downtown <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Tall buildings, crowds, and<br \/>\nescalators<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Every now and then, getting to go<br \/>\nto something fancy and grand<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Running into people I know on the<br \/>\nstreet<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Being in the center of things<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The subway<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Restaurant delivery, drugstore<br \/>\ndelivery, courier services<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Being readily available for the<br \/>\nworld of publishing, media, and the opportunities and possibilities that just<br \/>\nmight come up<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"timesquare.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/133\/import\/timesquare.jpg\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"float: left;margin: 0 20px 20px 0\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Times Square<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Having a 212 area code <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Being car-free and getting to walk<br \/>\nall over and never think about needing to &#8220;get more exercise&#8221; or &#8220;eat less&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Having a gym and a trainer<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The Village. God, I love The<br \/>\nVillage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Broadway. Even though don&#8217;t see all<br \/>\nthat many shows, it makes me happy just knowing it&#8217;s there<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">All the shops and salons and<br \/>\nservices that can make a woman beautiful <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Knowing that, God willing, I&#8217;ll get to<br \/>\nbe an old lady here and walk these streets, maybe with a cane or a walker but<br \/>\nstill free and independent<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The intellectual ferment, the<br \/>\ndiscussions, the classes, so much to learn and take in<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Having visitors from Kansas City<br \/>\nand everywhere else, and showing them the city<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Taxi drivers &#8211; a high percentage of<br \/>\nwhom talk to me about spiritual things. That always gives me a thrill. It makes<br \/>\nme believe in world peace, one cab at a time&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Having a coffee place every few blocks,<br \/>\nand any one of them willing to let me bring my computer and write a book<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a herb shop.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/133\/import\/a%20herb%20shop.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"float: right;margin: 0 0 20px 20px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Inspiration from sights, sounds,<br \/>\nand people<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Chinatown<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The farmers&#8217; markets, especially<br \/>\nUnion Square. all those fruits and vegetables juxtaposed against concrete and<br \/>\nskyscrapers. I think it&#8217;s beautiful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mooshoes.com\">Moo Shoes<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.caravanofdreams.net\/\">Caravan of Dreams<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.caravanofdreams.net\/\">Candle 79<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacredchow.com\">Sacred Chow<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.purefoodandwine.com\">Pure Food &amp; Wine<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Going to my friends&#8217; cabarets and<br \/>\nplays and book signings<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The Dream &#8212; that as long as I&#8217;m<br \/>\nhere, It (the Dream) could find me <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Being close to LaGuardia<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Having a doorman<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Macy&#8217;s and Bloomingdale&#8217;s and<br \/>\nBergdorf&#8217;s. This one goes way back: my mom managed the beauty salons in The<br \/>\nJones Stores in Kansas City back when it was a little girl. I grew up in department<br \/>\nstores. They make me feel safe and happy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Being a writer in the city where<br \/>\nhalf the great writers of the English language lived. (The other half lived in<br \/>\nLondon and I loved living there, too.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unityofnewyork.org\">Unity<\/a> in Symphony Space and the<br \/>\nUnity classes downtown<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">All the things I have yet to do,<br \/>\nlike renting a car on a Sunday morning and driving around The Village to<br \/>\nfinally, thoroughly get the lay of the land; or leaving Manhattan long enough<br \/>\nto really discover Brooklyn<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Talking to strangers<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teaandsympathynewyork.com\/restaurant.php\">Tea &amp; Sympathy<\/a>, the English<br \/>\ntea shop on Greenwich Avenue <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The Upper West Side<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Lectures at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.92y.org\">92<\/a><sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.92y.org\">nd<\/a><\/sup><a href=\"http:\/\/www.92y.org\"><br \/>\nStreet Y<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Neighborhood<br \/>\npharmacies<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Central Park and the squirrels<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Washington Square Park and the<br \/>\nreally tame squirrels<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"1 Wash Sq.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/133\/import\/1%20Wash%20Sq.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center;margin: 0 auto 20px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Places of inspiration: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0051383\/\">Auntie<br \/>\nMame<\/a>&#8216;s townhouse (she was invented, but the address is real)&#8230;the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.algonquinroundtable.org\/\">Algonquin Round Table<\/a>&#8230;the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hotelchelsea.com\/\">Chelsea Hotel<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Fruit vendors<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Subway<br \/>\nmusicians<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px\">Buing a Christmas tree on the street and carrying it home<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px\">Buying other things on the street: a hat, gloves, a photograph, roasted chestnuts in the wintertime and Italian ice in the summer<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The delicious anonymity of the<br \/>\ncity. I can sit on the subway crying my eyes out and nobody bothers me, or I<br \/>\ncan walk down the street singing out of tune and, as long as I&#8217;m not loud about<br \/>\nit, nobody minds<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twoboots.com\/TW2008\/Gc08\/Gc08.html\">TwoBoots Pizza<\/a> in Grand Central<br \/>\nStation where they have a vegan pizza option. (I remember the day I discovered<br \/>\nthis: whole-wheat crust and no cheese&#8212;in a train station! It was as if NYC<br \/>\nwas saying to me: &#8220;I&#8217;ve accommodated everybody&#8217;s religion and philosophy and<br \/>\ndreams for 200 years. I can handle the fact that you want cheeseless pizza.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Madison Avenue<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The characters &#8211; the crazies, the<br \/>\neccentrics, the exotics, all of them<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">The fact that everybody comes here.<br \/>\nThe Dalai Lama. The President. People who want to be President. Barbra<br \/>\nStreisland and Liza Minnelli. Someone amazing is always here, in addition to<br \/>\nthe amazing people who are here fulltime. I rarely go to hear their lecture or<br \/>\ntheir concert, but I could.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">My professional organizations &#8211; the<br \/>\nAuthors Guild, the American Society of Journalists &amp; Authors, NY Women in<br \/>\nCommunications<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Ubiquitous, low-priced nail salons<br \/>\nand their impromptu back-rubs<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Turning on the TV or going to a<br \/>\nmovie and proudly thinking, &#8220;I live there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Trains, and being able to go<br \/>\nsomewhere on one<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Being happy when I hear the song<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyricsfreak.com\/f\/frank+sinatra\/new+york+new+york_20056380.html\">&#8220;New York, New York&#8221;<\/a> and getting to think, &#8220;Yeah, I&#8217;m doing that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">History: the cabarets, the<br \/>\nrestaurants with white tablecloths, the fine hotels &#8212; vestiges of the world<br \/>\nthat was already leaving when I was a child and is all but gone now. But here<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s still some of it. It makes me feel warm and protected<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Being here as a person of<br \/>\nconscience and consciousness, doing my tiny part on some spiritual level, I<br \/>\nthink, to protect this precious island from terrorism and other bad things<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">NYU and Columbia, if I could ever<br \/>\ngo back to school and get that graduate degree in theology I&#8217;ve thought about<br \/>\nfor twenty-five years<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Moby&#8217;s tea shop (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teany.com\">Teany<\/a>) and the<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenement.org\">Tenement Museum<\/a> and the whole Lower East Side<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Harlem, and that we were able to<br \/>\nbuy an apartment there<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Feeling that I live in a place that genuinely suits me, where my energy matches<br \/>\nits energy, where all my facets fit and I don&#8217;t have to hide any of them or<br \/>\npretend to be someone else.
