I’m writing late, so there are only a couple of hours left in Gandhi’s birthday, but it’s adjacent \"gandhi.jpg\"<\/span>to St. Francis Day, coming on Sunday with animal blessings happening around the world, so I thought I could get in something for both “great souls.” Gandhi said that we can judge a nation by how it treats the powerless: the old, the disenfranchised, the animals. When I think of him, and of St. Francis, I’m reminded that if my circle of compassion isn’t widening, it’s shrinking. <\/p>\n

It was interesting today that, as if to mark the Mahatma’s birthday, I saw for the first time a bus ad for going vegetarian. There was a lovely pig portrait and these words:<\/div>\n

How much cruelty can you swallow?<\/b> Before being turned into
\nburgers, hot dogs, and nuggets, farm animals suffer painful mutilations,
\nextreme confinement, cruel handling 
\n<\/span>and violent deaths. Choose compassion. Choose vegetarian. — Mercy for
\nAnimals.<\/p>\n
