I had lunch today with a writer-friend who asked for a reminder about how we met. He said, “I must know thousands of people. It’s hard to keep everyone straight.” I know what he’s talking about. We know more people—even in person, much less on Facebook—than our ancestors could have dreamed of. (That’s in addition to all the information we know. My friend today told me that in the 14th Century, most people had to absorb less information in a lifetime than is in a single Sunday New York Times<\/span>.)<\/p>\n

But back to people: in terms of how many we know, we have an embarrassment of riches. And yet, who is really there for us? Here’s a little coaching quiz to answer that question. Write your responses down and you’ll have \u00a0the list of your first-tier people.\u00a0<\/div>\n

Who would be physically present & fully there for you within a reasonable period of time if:<\/span><\/div>\n

…you were getting married in Vegas on short notice?<\/span><\/div>\n
…a close family member passed away?<\/span><\/div>\n
…you were being presented with a major award?<\/span><\/div>\n
…you were laid up with the flu or a broken leg?<\/span><\/div>\n
…you were diagnosed with a potentially fatal illness?<\/span><\/div>\n
…you had a baby, or a grandchild?<\/span><\/div>\n
…you met with a serious financial reversal?<\/span><\/div>\n
…you were moving to another country?<\/span><\/div>\n
…you had a disturbing argument with your spouse or lover?<\/span><\/div>\n
…you separated from your spouse or lover?<\/span><\/div>\n
…you didn’t get the job (part, promotion, etc.) that you desperately wanted?<\/span><\/div>\n
…you were put in prison?<\/span><\/div>\n

Now that you have your list, call those people and tell them how much you appreciate them.<\/div>\n
