These were collected by David and Karen Gamow, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarityseminars.com\">Clarity<br \/>\nSeminars<\/a>, Mountain View, California. With thanks to the Gamows and the New Age,<br \/>\nI share with you:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Top 10 Facts on<br \/>\nStress &amp; How Meditation Reduces It<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in\">1.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8216;Stress is linked to the following illnesses: hypertension,<br \/>\nheart attacks, diabetes, asthma, chronic pain, allergies, headache, backache,<br \/>\nvarious skin disorders, cancer, and immune system weaknesses as it decreases<br \/>\nthe number of white blood cells and the changes in their function.&#8217; (<i>Nation&#8217;s<br \/>\nBusiness<\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in\">2.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8216;Stress is more powerful than diet in influencing cholesterol<br \/>\nlevels. Several studies, including one of medical students around exam time and<br \/>\nanother of accountants during tax season, have show significant increases in<br \/>\ncholesterol levels during stressful events, when there was little change in<br \/>\ndiet.&#8217; (Dr. Paul Rosch, Prof. of Medicine, New York Medical College)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in\">3.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8216;Four hundred people were intentionally exposed to common-cold<br \/>\nviruses. Those who scored highest on a test of stressful life events were more<br \/>\nthan twice as likely to develop colds after exposure than people who scored<br \/>\nlowest.&#8217; (Dr. Sheldon Cohen, Carnegie Mellon University, Nat&#8217;l Institute of<br \/>\nHealth Conference)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in\">4.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8216;Meditation decreases oxygen consumption, heart rate,<br \/>\nrespiratory rate, and blood pressures, and increase the intensity of alpha,<br \/>\ntheta, and delta brain waves, the opposite of the physiological changes that<br \/>\noccur during the stress response.&#8217; (Herbert Benson, MD, Harvard Medical School)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in\">5.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8216;Meditation significantly controls high blood pressure at<br \/>\nlevels comparable to widely used prescription drugs, and without the side<br \/>\neffects of drugs.&#8217; (&#8220;Hypertension,&#8221; <i>AMA Journal<\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in\">6.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8216;Meditators are more able to reduce chronic pain by more than<br \/>\n50%, while increasing daily function and markedly improving their moods, even<br \/>\nfour years after completion of an 8-week training course.&#8217; (Jon Kabat-Zinn, MD,<br \/>\nStress Reduction Clinic, University of Massachusetts)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in\">7.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8216;75% of long-term insomniacs who have been trained in<br \/>\nrelaxation and meditation can fall asleep within twenty minutes of going to<br \/>\nbed.&#8217; (Dr. Gregg Jacobs, psychologist, Harvard)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in\">8.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8216;Reducing stress can dramatically reduce heart disease. In a<br \/>\nfive-year study of heart disease patients, those who learned to manage stress<br \/>\nreduced their risk of having another heart attack by 74%, compare with patients<br \/>\nreceiving medication only. Reducing stress also proved more beneficial than<br \/>\ngetting exercise.&#8217; (Dr. James Blumenthal, Duke University)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in\">9.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8216;A study of women with PMS showed a 58% improvement in their<br \/>\nsymptoms after five months of daily meditation.&#8217; (<i>Health<\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\"> magazine)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in\">10.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>&#8216;High school<br \/>\nstudents who study relaxation rtechniques stay in school more often and have<br \/>\nfew incidents of suspension.&#8217; (<i>The Education Initiative, <\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">Mind\/Body Medical Institute, Harvard University)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\">But where&#8217;s Victoria?
