Unfortunately not the kind you can put pasties on."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I first heard about Easter Sunrise Service at the Cemetery, I was expecting something spectacular. I mean, why else would you haul ass out of bed at 5:30AM on a perfectly decent Sunday morning?<\/p>\n<p>I expected to see the sun rise over the magnificent city of Portland, Oregon.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Instead it rained cats and dogs.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-780\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/yearofsundays\/2011\/05\/easter-sunday-at-the-cemetery.html\/rain\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-780\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/235\/2011\/05\/Rain-450x299.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I expected a somber, intimate service.<\/p>\n<p>Instead there was a huge crowd and a table of free Hostess Donettes.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-781\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/yearofsundays\/2011\/05\/easter-sunday-at-the-cemetery.html\/donettes\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-781\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/235\/2011\/05\/donettes-450x299.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I expected an A Capella men&#8217;s chorus or a campfire-like sing-along.<\/p>\n<p>Instead there were the Crystal Gayle Vibrato Sisters who wouldn&#8217;t recognize a key if it jumped up and bit them in the auto-tuner.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-782\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/yearofsundays\/2011\/05\/easter-sunday-at-the-cemetery.html\/crystal-gayle-sisters\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-782\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/235\/2011\/05\/Crystal-Gayle-Sisters-450x299.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I expected a sermon so ripe with mystery and awe that I would seriously begin to question my lack of faith.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I got &#8220;He is risen indeed,&#8221; and confirmation that faith and I are still aren&#8217;t speaking to one another.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-783\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/yearofsundays\/2011\/05\/easter-sunday-at-the-cemetery.html\/dsc_0410\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-783\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/235\/2011\/05\/DSC_0410-450x431.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"431\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I expected an insightful, intellectual bible reading.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I got the Road to Emmaus, one of the hardest passages for a non-believer to hear without rolling her eyes.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-784\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/yearofsundays\/2011\/05\/easter-sunday-at-the-cemetery.html\/road-closed\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-784\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/235\/2011\/05\/road-closed-450x319.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I expected reverence for the dead.<\/p>\n<p>Instead the only dead person mentioned was Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-785\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/yearofsundays\/2011\/05\/easter-sunday-at-the-cemetery.html\/wall\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-785\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/235\/2011\/05\/wall-450x324.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I expected to be reminded of my own mortality.<\/p>\n<p>I simply&#8230; wasn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-786\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/yearofsundays\/2011\/05\/easter-sunday-at-the-cemetery.html\/flowers\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-786\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/235\/2011\/05\/flowers-450x253.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I first heard about Easter Sunrise Service at the Cemetery, I was expecting something spectacular.
