{"id":890,"date":"2011-07-12T10:24:31","date_gmt":"2011-07-12T14:24:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/windowsanddoors\/?p=890"},"modified":"2011-07-12T10:24:31","modified_gmt":"2011-07-12T14:24:31","slug":"larry-david%e2%80%99s-jewish-universe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/windowsanddoors\/2011\/07\/larry-david%e2%80%99s-jewish-universe.html","title":{"rendered":"Larry David\u2019s Jewish Universe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like the old Levy\u2019s rye bread commercial said, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be Jewish to love Larry\u201d.\u00a0 Okay, they said \u201cto love Levy\u2019s\u201d, but you get the point.\u00a0 And it\u2019s true, that you don\u2019t need to be Jewish to love either, but in the case of the Larry David Show, whose eighth season on HBO premiered on the 10<sup>th<\/sup>, it might help.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/m.forward.com\/blogs\/the-arty-semite\/139667\">Eitan Kensky <\/a>points out in his Forward article, Larry David creates a Jewish universe on his show.\u00a0 Unlike Kensky though, I see nothing defiant about it, and that too is an important part of the story &#8212; Jewish is distinct but not defiantly so.\u00a0 It is clearly demarcated as its own thing, but also seen as totally normal and capable of transcending its own boundaries without fear of dilution or diminution.\u00a0 In that regard, Larry David, whether consciously or not, charts a course for the future of Jews and Judaism in America.<\/p>\n<p>Whether Jews are ready for Larry David\u2019s Universe or not, I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I suspect not, and am not even sure that I am fully ready for it myself.\u00a0 On the other hand, the show works, it works for millions of people, most of whom are not, I imagine, Jewish.\u00a0 All of that, points to the fact that like Levy\u2019s, it may all work out quite well.\u00a0 Stay tuned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like the old Levy\u2019s rye bread commercial said, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be Jewish to love Larry\u201d.\u00a0 Okay, they said \u201cto love Levy\u2019s\u201d, but you get the point.\u00a0 And it\u2019s true, that you don\u2019t need to be Jewish to love either, but in the case of the Larry David Show, whose eighth season on HBO&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":133,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,3,4],"tags":[124,18,122,126,17,123,94,121,125],"class_list":["post-890","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-judaism","category-pop-culture","category-religion","tag-american-jewish-culture","tag-american-judaism","tag-eitan-kensky","tag-hbo","tag-judaism-2","tag-larry-david","tag-television","tag-the-forward","tag-tv"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
