Not to mention the potentially Biblical roots of this poetic form. My good friend and fiendishly funny Haiku writer, Jed Bergman, suggested an open forum for exchanging these telling little poems, which is just what I am doing.
\nCheck these out for starters:
\n*****
\nLacking fins or tail
\nThe gefilte fish swims with
\nGreat difficulty.
\n*****
\nBeyond Valium,
\nPeace is knowing one’s child
\nIs an internist.
\n*****
\nHer lips near my ear,
\nAunt Sadie whispers the name
\nOf her friend’s disease.
\n*****
\nThe sparkling blue sea
\nReminds me to wait an hour
\nAfter my sandwich.
\n*****
\nJews on safari —
\nMap, compass, elephant gun,
\nHard sucking candies.
\n*****
\nMom, please! There is no
\nNeed to put that dinner roll
\nIn your pocketbook.
\n*****
\nSeven-foot Jews in
\nThe NBA slam-dunking!
\nMy alarm clock rings .
\n*****
\nSorry I’m not home
\nTo take your call. At the tone
\nPlease state your bad news.
\n*****
\nOr, as I responded to the person who sent these to me:<\/p>\n

\nJewish Haiku
\nLike playing with food
\nPlaying with our words is fun
\nBut much more Jewish
\nOne can even write commentary on the Bible and Jewish Holidays in Haiku as this two paragraph poem, found on The Torah in Haiku<\/a>, does quite nicely:
\nSimchat Torah
\nOctober 9, 2009 in 5770, Simchat Torah by Ed
\nWe read of Moses
\nDying atop Mt. Nebo
\nAt the word of G-d
\nThen we start over
\nWith the creation story
\nLearning without end
\nAnd the biblical roots of this poetry? Well, how about this:
\nShe-ma Yis-ra-el,
\nA-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu,
\nA-do-nai E-chad
\nHear, o Israel!
\nThe Lord is our G-d,
\nThe Lord is One! (Alternatively: The Lord Alone!)
\nThe fact that it doesn’t work in English is not only irrelevant, but adds significance to the claim that Haiku was not necessarily originally or exclusively Japanese. And at the very least, we can comfortably say that if it’s a worthy enough format for what many understand as the classical statement of Jewish belief; it is surely worthy of our attention.
\nSo do you have a Haiku in you? You don’t have to be a Jew to, but Jewish themes would be especially appreciated.
