Her nominated song &#8220;Alive&#8221; from the multi-artist album <em>The Story <\/em>was one of 2011&#8217;s runaway smash hits, but Grant wants to make sure her fans (especially girls and young women) look past the image that comes from a platform and hears what she&#8217;s trying to say through her music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see this message that the culture is sending to girls,&#8221; Grant says. &#8220;I know the message that it sent to me and a lot of the struggles that I had growing up were because of that. I know what so many girls struggle with. I don\u2019t want to be the one that stands on stage and every girl out there says, \u2018Oh gosh, I couldn\u2019t look like that\u2019 or \u2018I want to look like that.\u2019 I would want them to say, \u2018There\u2019s a woman who\u2019s had a strong impact on my life because of her faith and the way that she lives her life and how honest and transparent she is.\u2019 Hopefully I\u2019m accomplishing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/2011\/12\/a-conversation-with-four-time-gma-female-vocalist-of-the-year-natalie-grant.html\" target=\"_blank\">A conversation with Natalie Grant<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/files\/2012\/04\/needtobreathe_reckoning.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1107\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/263\/2012\/04\/needtobreathe_reckoning-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>NEEDTOBREATHE <\/strong>(Group of the Year, Rock\/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year, Rock\/Contemporary Album of the Year) has steadily grown from struggling college rock band to general market force. The band is walking through huge doors that include last year\u2019s touring stint with Taylor Swift and regular television appearances on shows like \u201cThe Tonight Show with Jay Leno,\u201d \u201cThe Late Show with David Letterman\u201d and \u201cConan.\u201d The band won multiple Dove Awards this year but Whole Notes recently posted an archived interview with lead singer Bear Rinehart from six years ago when the band was just getting started:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s always a more artistic and a smarter version of you that you\u2019re always worried about meeting,&#8221; Rinehart said. &#8220;All of us are intelligent guys. We didn\u2019t get into this by being idiots. We are cultured. It is a little different when people do get to know us. Hopefully they see that we have thought these things out. Hopefully we\u2019re culturally relevant and we\u2019re not just walking around oblivious to what\u2019s going on in the world and using a bunch of Christian clich\u00e9s.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/2012\/04\/whole-notes-flashback-bear-rinehart-of-needtobreathe.html\" target=\"_blank\">A conversation with NEEDTOBREATHE&#8217;s Bear Rinehart<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/files\/2012\/04\/DCB2011solo3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1108\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/263\/2012\/04\/DCB2011solo3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>David Crowder Band <\/strong>(Christmas Album of the Year) is calling it quits this spring despite being one of the most popular figures within the modern worship scene. David Crowder admits that he&#8217;s never been comfortable with his role as a nationally recognized worship leader and has tried to use social media to lessen the gap between him and the band&#8217;s rabid fans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve tried to use it to say, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re in the same boat. Our minds work the same way yours works. We think about the same stuff you think about. We have the same issues that you have,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cI feel like we\u2019ve done that very successfully and it something I walk away feeling good about in terms of how we\u2019ve used the platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/2012\/02\/a-conversation-with-award-winning-recording-artist-david-crowder.html\" target=\"_blank\">A conversation with David Crowder<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/files\/2012\/04\/Jeremy_Camp_Photo_12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1109\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/263\/2012\/04\/Jeremy_Camp_Photo_12-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Jeremy Camp <\/strong>(Special Event Album of the Year) didn&#8217;t have a new album out in 2011 but he did contribute to <em>The Story<\/em>, however, with his song &#8220;Move In Me,&#8221; which is sung from the perspective of the Apostle Paul. Camp also released a book called <em>I Still Believe <\/em>and continued to tour like a mad man. In his new book, he talks candidly about losing his first wife to cancer and how he and his second wife Adie lost a child to miscarriage. Through all of that, Camp says his strength ultimately came from a supernatural source.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(The song \u2018I Still Believe\u2019) was such a big part of the healing process for me,\u201d Camp says. \u201cEven singing it live now, it kind of takes me back to that place more and more in a good way. So I\u2019ll share my testimony through that song. It\u2019s special and I usually do it acoustic now, so it\u2019s very intimate and personal. In the end we kick it in, but it\u2019s always a special moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/features.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/2011\/11\/a-conversation-with-award-winning-recording-artist-jeremy-camp.html\" target=\"_blank\">A conversation with Jeremy Camp<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/files\/2012\/04\/Lecrae11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1110\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/263\/2012\/04\/Lecrae11-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Lecrae <\/strong>(Rap Hip\/Hop Recorded Song of the Year, Rap\/Hip Hop Album of the Year, Special Event Album of the Year) is breaking some serious ground at this year\u2019s Dove Awards. The Dallas native is the first hip hop artist in GMA history to be nominated for Artist of the Year. But for Lecrae, the honor is something he prefers to share with others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen people celebrate the gifting, it\u2019s ultimately a celebration of the Giver,\u201d Lecrae says. \u201cIt\u2019s just acknowledging what God is doing in and through us. That\u2019s exciting for me. And my whole team is excited about it. They know that they had a role to play in any kind of success that I\u2019ve garnered. And whether he\u2019s writing a song for himself or one of his prot\u00e9g\u00e9s, Tobymac wants them all to \u201cmatter to people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want an opportunity to touch as many people as it can,\u201d he says. \u201cSometimes that\u2019s more of a shotgun than a rifle. It\u2019s this body of work that might grab you if you\u2019re struggling or it might grab you if you absolutely want to sit in the throne room. I want to reach all of those people. The band\u2019s new album <em>Come To The Well <\/em>(accompanied by lead singer Mark Hall\u2019s book <em>The Well<\/em>) spawned the hit song \u201cCourageous,\u201d which was the lead track for the movie by the same name. Hall always considers it an honor to participate in the Dove Awards due to the music\u2019s influence in his life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was discipled by Christian music,\u201d he says. \u201cI didn\u2019t really have a mentor in my life as a young believer. I had a pretty good church, but that was about it. So it was me and Jesus and Christian radio. Steven Curtis Chapman and dcTalk and Audio Adrenaline and those guys poured into me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/features.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/2011\/11\/a-conversation-with-casting-crowns-lead-singer-mark-hall.html\" target=\"_blank\">A conversation with Casting Crowns lead singer Mark Hall<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/files\/2012\/04\/nichole_nordeman1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1113\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/263\/2012\/04\/nichole_nordeman1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Nicole Nordeman <\/strong>(Special Event Album of the Year) hasn\u2019t been recording or touring for the past few years. Instead, the award-winning singer\/songwriter has been focusing on family life. But when the chance to write the lyrics for a groundbreaking project called <em>The Story <\/em>came her way, it was an opportunity she couldn\u2019t pass up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I got a small understanding of what the project was about, it just felt totally right,\u201d Nordeman says. \u201cIt felt like it was right up my alley. I loved the idea of writing about these characters in first person instead of just retelling the events of the story again. I loved the idea of digging into the DNA of their characters. It just felt right from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/2011\/10\/nichole-nordeman-talks-about-life-away-from.html\" target=\"_blank\">A conversation with Nicole Nordeman<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/wholenotes\/files\/2012\/04\/Switchfoot-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1114\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/263\/2012\/04\/Switchfoot-11-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Switchfoot <\/strong>(Rock Recorded Song of the Year, Rock Album of the Year) has fully embraced its new existence as an independent band. Of course, they do have distribution through Atlantic Records, but they are enjoying a new found freedom that is resulting in some of the band\u2019s most creative music to date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Working on Vice Verses) reminded me a lot of my roots and where I first started,\u201d keyboardist Jerome Fontamillas says. \u201cWe have this blank canvas and we can do whatever we want with it. It\u2019s really exciting. But last year, the Sixpence None The Richer lead singer took time to contribute to <em>The Story<\/em> (along with duet partner Matthew West) and record her first hymns project. Still, it\u2019s her son Henry that always comes first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is the greatest thing ever,\u201d Nash says. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine what I was ever doing when I didn\u2019t have him. It\u2019s been life changing\u2026I\u2019m really happy and peaceful.
