It was written by the Christian singer, Michael W. Smith. It is sung in churches all over the world. I first heard the song when I was a little girl and have been singing it ever since. I love to sing it with the other members of the praise team at my church. It captivates many people with the lyrics and sound of the music. Although it is quite repetitive, there could be a reason or many different reasons for that. I like to think of it as a prayer or a call to God asking Him to show His glory to us and have His presents alive within our spirits. The lyrics are as follows:

First verse: “This is the air I breathe. This is the air I breathe. Your holy presence living in me. This is my daily bread. This is my daily bread. Your very word spoken to me. And I I’m desperate for you. And I, I’m lost without you. “

We really do have the Lord’s holy presence within us and living within us. Sometimes we may even feel His presence stirring within us in order to help us make changes in areas of our lives that we may have become blinded to. We are only alive because of God’s mercy and grace towards us. We never know, and we never will know when our last day on earth will be. We breathe every breath because of God.

He gives us the breath we have in our lungs and the feelings we have within our hearts souls and our minds. Every day he gives us everything we need to support our body and need. He knows exactly what we need when we need it. We just must be patient and wait for His timing to fall into place. Although the waiting can often be the hardest part, whether it is day to day living or in any aspect of a long-awaited break from any sorrow we may be dealing with, God never turns away from us.

His very words are spoken in the Bible. We can always make the time to read His word, just as He made time for us on earth and by dying on the cross for our sins. He always wants to hear from us whether in prayer, through reading of His word in fellowship or in silent prayer.

Second verse: “This is the air I breathe. This is the air I breathe. Your holy presence living in me. This is my daily bread. This is my daily bread. Your very word, spoken to me. Chorus: And I, I’m desperate for you. And I, I’m lost without you. This is the air I breathe. This is the air I breathe. Your holy presence living in me. This is my daily bread. This is my daily bread. Your very word spoken to me. Chorus: And I, I’m desperate for you. And I, I’m lost without you. This is the air I breathe. This is the air I breathe. Your holy presence living in me. This is my daily bread. This is my daily bread. Your very word. Spoken to me. And I’m desperate for you. And I’m, I’m lost without you. I’m lost without you.”

We are often desperate for God to show up in some way or another in our lives. Often times, we are just about to give up on Him ever possibly showing up, and then He shows His face clearly. Or He whispers softly to our hearts. We most often only seem to call on Him when we are desperate. We are desperate for Him to help us through our struggles, our sorrows and we are desperate to know that He still cares enough about us. We are desperate to know that He hasn’t left us to carry the burdens of this life on our own. The good news is that He has never left us and that He never will. No matter what we do or have done in our lives, we can always call on God and ask for forgiveness. His word is also spoken to us by the pastors through the sermons and confessions of absolutions in church.

God’s word is also spoken by our family members and friends when we need it the most. If we listen closely we will even hear His voice speaking directly to us through reading the scriptures ourselves and through prayer. Cry out to Him and say that you are desperate for Him. He always hears your cries for help. It may not be in the form you are wanting, but God will eventually answer you and help you through things in life. Breathe and try to enjoy the life that He gave you. It is too short to not catch your breath and marvel about all the good things that are happening because of Him being in your life.

“Breathe” is one of the most well-known songs from the 90s.
