They have so many hit songs, that it’s hard to pick which one to write on. However, I picked a song that is easy dig into the meanings behind it, as well as a fun song to explore. The Song is called “Nothing Compares”.

The lyrics for the first verse and chorus are as follows: “I’ve heard all the stories. I’ve seen all the signs. Witnessed all the glory. Tasted all that’s fine. But, nothing compares to the greatness of knowing You, Lord. Nothing compares to the greatness of knowing You, Lord.” The words pretty much speak for themselves but I’m digging deeper into them. Everyone has heard the stories about great food, good company and finer things in life. But, how many people know Jesus and God on a deep personal level?

If you know God in the intimate ways through prayer, scripture, and going to church regularly, that’s awesome. But there’s something incredible about knowing that absolutely nothing compares to knowing Him as your Lord. You know that nothing can ever come close to the greatness of recognizing Him for who He really is. The greatness of knowing Him comes from exploring the beauty of His wonders on Earth, through prayers, and through getting to know other believers. It also comes through spending quality time with Him.

The second verse and chorus are as follows: “I see all the people. Wasting all their time. Building up their riches. For a life that’s fine. But, nothing compares to the greatness of knowing You, Lord. Nothing compares to the greatness of knowing You, Lord.” This verse says that people have been wasting their time by not knowing God. That might seem harsh, but it literally is the truth. If people don’t know God and what He can do for them in their lives, then their lives on earth might be a bit worth it, but they’ll never have a reward of eternal life in Heaven. How can anyone pass that opportunity up? Think about it, the song says nothing compares to knowing God personally, so why would anyone ever want to miss out on the opportunity to get to know Him? Why would anyone want to waste their time thinking that He doesn’t exist, when there are clear cut signs that He does in fact exist.

The bridge is as follows: “I find myself just living for today. Cause I don’t know what tomorrow’s gonna bring. So no matter if I rise or fall, I’ll never be alone, oh no. But, nothing compares to the greatness of knowing You, Lord. Nothing compares to the greatness of knowing You, Lord.” This will forever hold true, that we don’t know what tomorrow may bring, or whether we will be welcoming tomorrow. We don’t know when our last day is. This fact can scare some people, thinking something like ‘oh boy, how will I ever get God to forgive me’, or ‘how will I ever get God to pay attention to me?’ Some may even think, ‘why try talking to Him when I’ve sinned so much? What will He do to me?’ Or even asking ‘how can I make it to Heaven and can I do it without God?’ The answer is no. we can’t do it without God. We will fail every time.

However, some people will find comfort in knowing that our days are numbered and that God is in complete control. It brings some people comfort to know that we aren’t the ones who know how long we will be around for. This gives us the opportunity to get to know Him and others, to spread His word and to do what He has called us to do before our time is up. I know I’d rather have Him in control than have me in control of anything, because even though hard times happen, we can rest assured that He knows and wants what is best for us. Why try to control our lives, when He is clearly already in control.

In our lives, no matter where we can go, what we can see, or what we could and can do on our own, nothing compares to knowing God. Even what could be given to us ,or what we can accomplish, no matter what ever happens in our lives, there is nothing that will even come close to knowing Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Embrace that opportunity to get to know Him freely through His salvation.

Third Day is a Christian rock band that has been around since the early 1990s.
