Doubt can cause many fears and many sleepless nights. It can even cause sickness such as stomach ulcers and other sicknesses.  Doubt can cause you to question everything and everyone in your life. If you doubt someone in your life, and think they aren’t telling you the truth at all times, it can cause severe stress in your life and in their life, as well as in the relationship you two share. You could even be known as doubting Thomas. When we doubt, we’re letting the world tell us everything has to happen by our own power and we tend to believe that everything has to happen right away too. When we think we’re the ones in control of our lives, we are the ones deceiving ourselves. We are not the ones that are even meant to be in control of our lives and our doubt often causes us to forget that God is the one who gave us our lives to enjoy and to not doubt what will happen.
Why do we doubt? Do we think we are incapable of change, are we afraid to face the truths, of certain situations? Are we afraid that we will never get anywhere in life? What if we never get that promotion? What if things don’t work out with the person we are dating?  Are we afraid God has and will disapprove of us? Are we afraid God will hurt us by letting hard times teach us lessons?
What do we doubt?  Do we doubt our own abilities or someone else’s faith in us-that we are not meant for the greatness that He has already instilled within us? Or do we doubt our own abilities to trust in God’s promises and in His timing?  We often doubt our abilities because we feel as though we can’t accomplish the tasks in front of us because they seem so daunting or even nearly impossible. We doubt ourselves, our friends and our family. and even worse, we doubt God and His never-ending ability to help His children. Jesus even asks why we doubt in the Bible. When Jesus appeared on the lake, Peter recognized him got excited and started to swim to Him. But as soon as he saw the waves and heard the wind, he became afraid and cried out save me lord! Jesus reached out to him and pulled him to his feet all while asking, “where is your faith? Why did you doubt? You of little faith…”
When we start doubting our own abilities we are also doubting the plans God has for our lives. Instead we need to trust Him. When we allow doubt into our minds we give Satan the stronghold that he desperately wants, in and over our lives. Doubt can control our lives if we choose to let it. We don’t have to let doubt control us though either. Jesus gives us the ultimate way out of doubt-turn every thought that we have over to God.
There are many verses about doubt in the Bible. Some of them include:
Mathew 14:22-23 says, “Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
James 1:6 says, “6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”
Mathew 21:22 says, “22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
Luke 24: 38 says, “38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?”
The story of doubting Thomas in the Bible is as follows in John 20:27: 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
We don’t ever have to doubt God or His presence in our lives. He is always there for us. We don’t ever have to doubt each other because God knows what is true and untrue even before we do. God wants to take away our doubt and for us to live with Him.
