glasses of faith

What are some great verses and reminders for marriage? The Bible is the perfect tool to use to see what a marriage should be like and how you should treat your significant other, husband and wife. Why is it the ideal place to turn to? Why is it the perfect book to look at? The Bible is God’s word, and God-ordained marriage Himself.

Verses That Tell You About Marriage

Some verses that tell you good pointers about marriage include:

Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.  The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Genesis 2:22-24 NIV

How God created a woman out of Adam is an interesting thing to think about. It is fascinating to think that God didn’t want the man to be alone and made him an equal partner. When two people get married to one another, they are two becoming one flesh. They are joined together in the sanctity of marriage. Men are often seen as the stronger sex and women are seen as the gentler sex. That comparison isn’t significant compared to the two people being of equal partnership.

Being of Equal Partnership

What does being of equal partnership means that each person carries their weight and does their job, but that both people help each other out when the other person asks.  Both parties do their fair share in keeping the house, car and the yard clean and making dinner. Both parties help pay the bills and do things together.

Being equal partners means treating each other as such. It doesn’t mean continually pointing out something you can’t stand about the other person. That type of attitude only leads to more problems and more arguments.  Some days there are legit excuses for not getting things done right away like a family emergency or a work emergency, and other times there aren’t.

Being equal partners means doing something without being asked. When you do something without the other person asking, it means that you are taking the initiative and being responsible. Don’t always leave stuff to be done until the last minute either. When you see something needs to be done, get in the habit of taking care of it right away. Procrastination and laziness give way to thinking oh I’ll do it another day.

The next thing you know, you forgot to take care of something important, and you might end up suffering physically, emotionally or even financially for it.  The more time you put into something and just get it done right away, instead of putting it off, more time to be spent on doing fun things instead of being annoyed with chores.

Be Faithful to One Person Only

When you marry someone, you make a vow to be faithful to that person alone. Take that vow very seriously. Don’t let yourself get swept away in the temptation to look at different women or cheat on your wife with different women. Likewise, wives don’t give in to the temptation of an affair with other men. It will only destroy your marriage. Some verses about staying faithful include:

Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find?  The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them. Proverbs 20:6-7 NIV

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.  For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.  Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. Ephesians 5:22-33 NIV

To Married Men

There is even a verse in the Bible that says when a man marries he shouldn’t even be sent to war for at least a year. He should stay home so that he has time to be with her, for both of them to get to know each other.

If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married. Deuteronomy 24:5 NIV

Marriage is a sacred bond between God, you and the person you love. Loving someone is a lot of work, but it can fill you with so much joy.
