Today, students and teachers will have the day off, as a district committee voted last year to close for one Muslim holiday each year.<\/p>\n<p>The holiday \u2013\u00a0Eid al-Adha \u2014 is also known as the \u201cFestival of Sacrifice\u201d (last week,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/stories\/florida-politician-attempts-to-block-islamic-animal-slaughter-ceremony\/\" target=\"_self\">the Blaze covered<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0Florida\u00a0legislature\u2019s attempts to block animal slaughters associated with this observance). It is one of the two \u201chigh holy days\u201d that are observed by Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>Schools will not be closed for the second holiday,\u00a0Eid-ul-Fatr (celebrating the end of Ramadan), as this holy day occurs in August (at the end of the summer). If both holidays do end up falling during an academic year, the district will only close for one of them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"float: right\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn7.fotosearch.com\/bthumb\/DVA\/DVA005\/010-0093.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"113\" \/>\u201cWe\u2019re ecstatic about this,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/2011\/11\/07\/massachusetts-school-district-marks-muslim-holiday\/\" target=\"_blank\">says Atif Harden<\/a>, the interim executive director of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center. \u201cThis is the first year that it\u2019s going to occur. This sort of recognition of our existence and the population we have, we feel very good about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision to close the district down in observance of the Islamic holiday came after Muslims\u00a0students\u00a0approached staffers, administrators and students at a school in the district in an attempt to launch a discussion about their faith. After meetings were held and leaders considered the fact that there is a large Muslim population in the district, the decision was solidified.<\/p>\n<p>Officials claims that the size of the Muslim population as well as a general push for inclusiveness are the reasons behind the policy change.
