A bill that would repeal New Hampshire\u2019s 2009 law legalizing same-sex marriage would also allow two citizens of either sex to enter into a civil union \u2014 even siblings.<\/p>\n

New Hampshire Republican state Rep. David Bates, the sponsor of the bill, confirmed this to The Daily Caller.<\/p>\n

Asked about the logic behind allowing siblings to enter into civil unions, Bates responded, \u201cYou have that question backwards. By definition in the bill, a \u2018civil union\u2019 means a contractual agreement that provides reciprocal benefits and obligations to the parties to the agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe proper question is: What logical or legally defensible reason is there to exclude anyone?\u201d Bates said. \u201cThere is none.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bill was passed out of the New Hampshire House\u2019s Judiciary Committee by an 11\u20136\u00a0vote on Tuesday. It is likely to sail through the state legislature, where Republicans hold enormous majorities in both chambers: 74 percent in the House and 79 percent in the Senate.<\/p>\n

Whether there are enough votes to override a promised veto by the state\u2019s Democratic governor, John Lynch, depends on the number of Republicans who break ranks to oppose the bill.\u00a0(FLASHBACK: Rhode Island on its way to legalizing civil unions for same-sex couples)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Bates\u00a0explained<\/a>\u00a0to the Union-Leader that incest laws would not be violated by allowing siblings to enter into civil unions. \u201cThere is no reason for us to speculate on the sexual nature of that relationship,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
