Mayor: \u2018Occupy\u2019 Protesters Putting Atlanta on \u2018Path to\u00a0Escalation\u2019<\/h1>\n

ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Atlanta\u2019s mayor is ready to put an end to the \u201cOccupy\u201d protests.<\/span><\/h6>\n
Amid rising costs to keep law enforcement present in and around Woodruff Park, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has urged an end to the \u201cOccupy Atlanta\u201d movement, a demonstration that began more than three weeks ago in response to \u201cOccupy Wall Street.\u201d<\/span><\/h6>\n

In a press conference Monday, Reed cited the additional $100,000 in beefed-up police presence for Saturday alone, as\u00a0officers worked overtime in 12-hour shifts to ensure safety for the protesters \u2014 the same protesters he connected to a hip-hop concert in the park that same day. Reed called the behavior of some of the \u201cOccupy Atlanta\u201d the kind of actions that \u201cputs them on a path to escalation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt drains important police resources from people who pay taxes in the city of Atlanta,\u201d Reed said.<\/p>\n

Some community leaders in support of \u201cOccupy Atlanta,\u201d however,\u00a0are against the mayor\u2019s stance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very disappointed about his position,\u201d State Sen. Vincent Fort told CBS Atlanta. \u201cI think it\u2019s unfortunate and wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since Reed\u2019s press conference Monday, the number of people demonstrating at Woodruff Park has increased significantly, Fort said.<\/div>\n

Several hundred protesters took part in the demonstration when Fort was there Monday night. Fort told CBS Atlanta that he was proud to support \u201cOccupy Atlanta,\u201d continuing to liken it to the civil rights demonstrations.<\/p>\n

Shortly after Reed\u2019s stance against the future of \u201cOccupy Atlanta,\u201d the group released a statement, saying that it stands firmly in solidarity with \u201cOccupy Wall Street\u201d and the other protests worldwide.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe corruption of our political system by modern-day robber barons is the real clear and present danger,\u201d the group said in a statement. \u201cPeople are literally dying in the streets while the Mayor\u2019s primary concern seems to be trying to end our attempt to shine a light on these problems.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though it isn\u2019t clear what the immediate future is for \u201cOccupy Atlanta\u201d in the wake of Reed saying the movement is draining taxpayer money, Fort believes the protests aren\u2019t likely to go away.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he wants to be like Bull Connor, then so be it,\u201d Fort said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOccupy Atlanta\u201d officials are expected to hold a press conference this afternoon. Emails sent by CBS Atlanta to \u201cOccupy Atlanta\u201d officials were not immediately returned.<\/p>\n

The mayor\u2019s office said it was going to release data related to Reed\u2019s stance, but no data has been released to this point.<\/p>\n
