One man was stomped to death and another man nearly killed in a racist amusement
\ncalled the”knock-out game,” currently being played by black teenagers.
\nThe victims were both\u00a0white, and that fact needs to be raised in our national conversation about race.<\/p>\n

PC disclaimer: only a tiny fraction of blacks play this game, and the vast majority of blacks
\ndo not condone violence of any kind.\u00a0 With that established, consider the facts:<\/p>\n

Half-brothers Elliott T. Murphy, 18, and Deonta “Fuss” Johnson, 16, were\u00a0recently convicted<\/a>
\nof first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in the heinous stomping death of
\n61-year-old Jerry Newingham and the stomping attack of 46-year-old Kevin S. Wilson.\u00a0 The
\ntwo convicted were part of a group of 9 blacks.\u00a0 Their two victims were white.\u00a0 The brutal
\nmurder took place in\u00a0Decatur, IL, a place\u00a0commonly known<\/a>\u00a0as “a classic\u00a0Midwest\u00a0USA
\nsmall city.”\u00a0 They group was playing the “knock-out game.”<\/p>\n

The game is as cruel and ignorant as it sounds.\u00a0 The only rule is to pick a victim and try
\nto knock them out. \u00a0The group of black teens in\u00a0Decatur\u00a0discussed playing the game,
\nbefore going out and finding a random victim for their\u00a0unprovoked attack<\/a>.\u00a0 They called it
\nthe “point ’em out, knock ’em out” game.<\/p>\n

After being let out of\u00a0school, the teens began their fun.\u00a0 They “randomly” selected a white
\nperson to play along. \u00a0The teens punched, kicked, and then jumped on and stomped their
\nfirst victim, Mr. Newingham. \u00a0He never regained consciousness after being mauled by the feral teens.<\/p>\n

Seventy minutes later<\/a>, the group beat up Kevin Wilson, who also just happened to be white.
\nOne witness said he saw Murphy\u00a0jump on Wilson’s head<\/a>\u00a0— jumping with both feet.\u00a0 That witness
\nsaid that Wilson was not even moving during and after the attack. \u00a0Another witness, a 14-year-old girl,
\ntold a detective<\/a>, “They were jumping on him like he was a trampoline, basically.”<\/p>\n

This is not the first time the game has been played. \u00a0Such attacks<\/a>\u00a0have been reported in\u00a0Illinois,
\nMassachusetts,\u00a0Missouri, and\u00a0New Jersey<\/a>.\u00a0 It was played\u00a0on a large scale<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Wisconsin, with as
\nmany as 18 suspects arrested for involvement. \u00a0Students in\u00a0Chicago\u00a0have produced a
\ncommunity service movie<\/a>\u00a0speaking out against the game.<\/p>\n

The “game” is not always lethal, but sometimes it is.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0St. Louis\u00a0earlier this year, a 72-year-old man named Hoang Nguyen was walking with his wife,
\nYen, when four “young people” approached them.\u00a0 One first grabbed Hoang and moved his face
\nto the side to make a “clear target for his fist<\/a>,” recalled his wife. \u00a0Nguyen was punched so hard
\nthat he fell to the ground and struck his head.\u00a0 Then the attacker turned on Nguyen’s 59-year-old
\nwife, punching her so hard that she suffered a broken eye socket.\u00a0 She could only watch as her
\nhusband was then kicked repeatedly by another one of the misunderstood youth. \u00a0Hoang
\nsuccumbed to his injuries later that day.\u00a0 A\u00a0young black male<\/a>, 18 years old, is charged with
\nfirst-degree murder in that attack.<\/p>\n

In general, the knockout game involves “unprovoked attacks on innocent bystanders<\/a>,”
\naccording to police who have had to deal with it.\u00a0 A retired police officer explains,
\n“Normally it was a group of black males, one of which would strike [the victim] as hard
\nas he could in the face, attempting to knock him out with one punch.” \u00a0The victims are
\ntypically\u00a0not robbed<\/a>, but simply punched with no provocation.\u00a0 One would be hard-pressed
\nto find an example of whites playing this “game.” \u00a0Given the racial make-up of victims and
\nattackers in this trend of crime, it makes sense to ask whether there is a racial motive involved.<\/p>\n

Between the\u00a0flash mobs<\/a>\u00a0and the knock-out game, we have very good reasons to change
\nthe way we think about racism in America.<\/p>\n

Why is the racial make-up of these crimes the way it is?\u00a0 Is it because non-blacks are more
\nattractive as victims? \u00a0If so, then it would be accurate to say that non-blacks are being targeted.
\nMaybe they’re not being targeted out of racial animosity, but surely any form of racial
\nselection is by definition a racial problem.<\/p>\n

Are the victims non-black because non-blacks will have more to steal? \u00a0That explanation makes sense when there is a robbery, but many times there is not. \u00a0One thing is certain: if the races were switched, this game — combined with the flash mobs — would be considered a national crisis.\u00a0 There would be a chorus of wailing and gnashing anguish the likes of which hasn’t been seen in over fifty years. \u00a0We would all be made to confess that racism has reemerged. \u00a0The attacks would be treated as a reflection of a massive, looming problem. \u00a0We would be talking about our nation’s rotten, racist soul if whites were playing this game.<\/p>\n

Instead, the races are reversed, and there is resolute silence about the racial aspect of these attacks.<\/p>\n

Of course, not all interracial crimes are necessarily racial, and not all racial crimes are hate crimes. \u00a0When a 68-year-old white woman named Sally Katona-King was\u00a0pushed down a flight of steps<\/a>\u00a0and killed at a Chicago train station by a black teen named Prince Watson, that was not necessarily a racial crime. \u00a0Watson had just robbed a woman at the train stop. \u00a0As he was running away, he tried to jump over the 68-year-old woman, but instead knocked her down. \u00a0There is nothing clearly racial about that, in terms of motive or intent to target the victim because of her race.<\/p>\n

In contrast, a group of young whites decided that they wanted to “go f**k with some n*****s,” then later killed a black man named\u00a0James Craig Anderson<\/a>.\u00a0 That will almost certainly be found a hate crime, and rightly so. \u00a0But that attack earned a special on CNN, while violence against non-blacks is not treated with the same level of attention, demonstrating a racial double standard that is quite frankly sinister. \u00a0That double standard is seen most clearly in the scant coverage of the\u00a0Wichita Massacre<\/a>, and the\u00a0Christian-Newsome killings<\/a>. \u00a0Few people even know the horror committed by blacks against whites in those killings.<\/p>\n

Of course, not every group has a habit of framing everything that happens in life in racial terms.\u00a0 Not every group sees its interests in racial terms, and perhaps we should be grateful for that. \u00a0But if we’re going to talk about the level of racism in America, we must make note of the disproportionate racial violence occurring. \u00a0Department of Justice statistics show that 33% of white murder victims are killed by a non-white, while only 8% of black murder victims are killed by a non-black.\u00a0 Greater disparities exist in violent crimes and robbery (1).\u00a0 Considering the population distribution, those disparities should trouble all of us, regardless of race.<\/p>\n

While schools, politicians, and activists produce a steady drumbeat of criticism about white racism or “hate,” there is much happening right in front of us that cancels out that narrative.<\/p>\n

When 85-year-old Yoko Cullen of\u00a0Belleville, IL, was\u00a0burned alive<\/a>\u00a0in the trunk of her car by three black carjackers, race probably was a factor.\u00a0 Those charged in her murder first abducted and carjacked her.\u00a0 But why did they choose her, of all people? \u00a0Police say that she was probably an “easy target<\/a>.” \u00a0Funny — that’s exactly what a black teen in Wisconsin said when he was asked why he and hundreds of other blacks\u00a0randomly beat whites at the state fair<\/a>\u00a0this month.<\/p>\n
