In a multi-part series published Thursday, the British medical journal The Lancet recommends national governments impose new regulations and taxes to stop an \u201cobesity epidemic\u201d that is sweeping the planet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The respected peer-reviewed journal lays out how the world has seen \u201cfour decades\u201d of a \u201crising obesity epidemic.\u201d One paper from Columbia and Harvard University researchers concludes that if \u201chistoric trends continue\u201d there will be \u201c65 million more obese adults in the USA and 11 million more in the UK by 2030.\u201d The authors also write that obesity \u201cis increasing in all countries, but rates vary widely.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an editorial, The Lancet says the obesity problem lacks a solution because \u201cgovernments\u2019 reactions so far are wholly inadequate and rely heavily on self-regulation by the food and beverage industry \u2026\u00a0[T]he obesity epidemic will not be reversed without government leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the Lancet series\u2019\u00a0lead experts, Harvard public\u00a0health<\/span><\/a>\u00a0professor Steven Gortmaker, argues that taxing sugar-sweetened beverages and\u00a0\u201cunhealthy food and drink,\u201d along with new government-imposed restrictions on food and beverage advertising to children, would curb obesity.<\/p>\n

\u201cGovernments are the most important actors in reversing the obesity epidemic, because protection and promotion of public goods, including public health, is a core responsibility,\u201d Gortmaker wrote. \u201cThe repercussions of obesity mainly burden the health system, but ministries outside health, such as finance, education, agriculture,\u00a0transportation<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and urban planning, arguably have the greatest influence in creating environments conducive to prevention.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gortmaker and his colleagues wrote the series\u2019 obesity\u00a0recommendations. They point to tobacco taxes and restrictions on marketing tobacco products to children as success stories and believe government-imposed regulations and taxes on \u201cunhealthy food and drink\u201d would produce similar results.<\/p>\n

In addition to national governments worldwide implementing new\u00a0nutrition<\/span><\/a>\u00a0policies, Gortmaker wants the United Nations to address obesity at its upcoming September meeting on non-communicable diseases in New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UN meeting provides a key opportunity to strengthen international leadership from the UN and its agencies, and to stimulate other agencies and states to begin to seriously address the continuing global epidemic of obesity,\u201d Gortmaker wrote. \u201cBeyond that meeting, the test will be how well Member States match their declarations with supportive funding and policies to support global actions.\u201d<\/p>\n
