\"\"Adorning an article in the Guardian is a picture you might think represented a prototypical family: a handsome couple standing behind three healthy, well-grown children. But according to the British paper, the parents \u2014 soccer star David Beckham and his wife, Victoria \u2014 are to be condemned. The problem is that, with the birth of a fourth child, the Beckhams have become \u201cbad role models and environmentally irresponsible,\u201d writes Guardian scribbler Tracy McVeigh.<\/p>\n

In reality, though, the irresponsibility lies with McVeigh.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to write an 850-word piece in which virtually every sentence serves to deceive, but McVeigh might have birthed just such an illegitimate bit of childishness. She quotes \u201ccampaigners,\u201d environmentalists, a Green MP, and others who all bleat the same message: The sky is falling due to overpopulation. And we\u2019ll all end up languishing in a Soylent Green sewer of endless humanity unless, as zoologist David Attenborough says, we eliminate the \u201cabsurd taboo\u201d against discussing family size.<\/p>\n

Okay, let\u2019s discuss it.<\/p>\n

Attenborough is right: There is a population problem in the world.<\/p>\n

It is that birthrates have been collapsing for decades, a phenomenon that has grave implications for society.<\/p>\n

Yes, you read that right. Sure, I know what you might have heard, and it\u2019s a result of misinformation like McVeigh\u2019s \u2014 and is also why she can get away with peddling such pap. But the truth is that birthrates are below replacement level in more than 70 nations worldwide; among these are not only every country you could call \u201cWestern\u201d save New Zealand (where the figure is right at replacement level, 2.1 children per couple), but also all of Eastern Europe and much of Asia. In fact, this demographic demise affects even nations you wouldn\u2019t suspect; for example, while Mexico\u2019s birthrate is still above replacement level, it\u2019s falling at an unprecedented rate. And Uruguay, Kazakhstan, and Algeria have birthrates of, respectively, 1.94, 1.88, and 1.82.<\/p>\n
