(Columbus, OH)<\/strong>\u00a0– Today,\u00a0Ohio\u00a0Governor John Kasich signed H.B. 78, the Late-Term Abortion Ban. This new law, supported by Ohio Right to Life,\u00a0is the most important piece of pro-life legislation that Ohio has passed in years and is part of an overall national strategy to overturn Roe v. Wade.\u00a0 The legislation\u00a0was advocated for by its sponsors\u00a0Rep. Joe Uecker (R -Loveland)<\/strong>,\u00a0Rep. Kristina Roegner (R-Cuyahoga Falls)\u00a0and Senator Peggy Lehner (R-<\/strong>\u00a0Kettering)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“In order to protect life, it takes compassionate leadership from our elected officials.\u00a0 By signing this critical pro-life legislation, Governor Kasich demonstrated to all Ohioans that the health and welfare of mothers and their unborn children are of paramount importance to the state of Ohio,” said Mike Gonidakis, Executive Director for Ohio Right to Life.\u00a0 “According to the Department of Health, an abortion took place in Ohio last year when the baby was 35 weeks old.\u00a0 From now on, these babies and their mothers will be protected,” said Gonidakis.<\/p>\n

This legislation bans post-viability abortions except when the pregnant woman’s life is in danger.\u00a0Up to this point in Ohio, a woman could legally have an abortion up to and through her ninth month of pregnancy.\u00a0With today’s signature by Governor Kasich, babies who can live outside of their mother’s womb\u00a0will no longer\u00a0be subject to death by abortion.<\/p>\n

The bill passed the Ohio House of Representatives earlier this year with an astounding 65 to 33 bi-partisan vote. \u00a0Last week, through the leadership of pro-life\u00a0Senate President Tom Niehaus (R-New Richmond)<\/strong>,\u00a0Senator Scott Oelslager (R-North Canton)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Senator Shannon Jones (R-Springboro),<\/strong>the bill\u00a0passed the Senate by an overwhelming bipartisan vote.<\/p>\n
