(CBS New York<\/a>)\u2013\u2026new intelligence indicates al Qaeda now wants to surgically implant bombs directly into a suicide bomber\u2019s body, reports CBS 2\u2032s Marcia Kramer.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely a change. It makes al Qaeda more lethal,\u201d said Rep. Peter King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.<\/p>\n

The Transportation Safety Administration is now warning international and domestic airlines traveling to the United States to be on the lookout for these new suicide bombers and to ramp up security.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe U.S. government has received information, intelligence about terrorist intent to use this type of concealment and this technique to try to carry out plots to blow up planes,\u201d TSA Director John Pistole said.<\/p>\n

The agency said\u00a0new measures\u00a0<\/strong>will be taken\u00a0including<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u201cInteraction with passengers<\/strong>, in addition to the use of other screening methods such as the pat-down and the\u00a0use of enhanced tools and technologies<\/strong>,\u201d said TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

None of the machines the TSA uses can see inside body cavities or underneath skin like a medical X-ray can. Several critics, including\u00a0members of Congress<\/a>\u00a0[3], have cited this inability to challenge TSA\u2019s plans to deploy the scanners at nearly every security lane by 2014. As an example, they\u00a0point<\/a>\u00a0[4] to\u00a0the 2009 attack at a Saudi palace<\/a>\u00a0[5] by a suicide bomber who detonated explosives secreted in his rectum.

\nThe security industry does sell X-ray machines, called transmission scanners, that can see inside body cavities and underneath skin. The Cook County sheriff in Illinoisintroduced<\/a>\u00a0[8] such a machine, known as the RadPRO SecurPASS, at its jail in February.

\nThere\u2019s no indication that the TSA has considered such machines, and an agency spokesman declined to answer whether it has. But it would be\u00a0extremely difficult for the TSA to gain public acceptance of such technology, given the controversy over the privacy and safety of its current body scanners.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A 2006 study by German physicists found that transmission scanners deliver a radiation dose that is\u00a020 to 85 times higher than the backscatter scanners.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The TSA has released several assessments showing that its backscatter machines emit a low dose equivalent to two minutes of a flight at high altitude, but they have not dowsed safety concerns. Last month, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a civil liberties group that has sued the TSA to suspend the scanner program, released documents showing concerns about cancer diagnoses among airport screeners in Boston.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
