Our friends at the Center for Military Readiness just informed us that one of our favorite Members of Congress,\u00a0Virginia\u00a0Foxx (R-NC), has proposed an amendment to ensure that defense\u00a0dollars are not used to violate the\u00a0Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).<\/strong>\u00a0 Please urge your Congressman to support this effort.<\/p>\n

In a hasty effort to implement the reversal of the 1993 law prohibiting homosexuals from openly serving in the military, often called \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell,\u201d which Congress approved during the lame duck session last December, the Navy Chief of Chaplains issued a memorandum stating that chaplains could perform same sex marriages once the ban was lifted. However, after traditional marriage defenders and concerned citizens like you protested this potential violation of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the Navy reversed its position.<\/p>\n

Congresswoman Foxx and her co-sponsor\u00a0Rep. Dan Burton<\/strong>\u00a0(R-IN) plan to offer this language as a limiting amendment to the\u00a0House Defense Appropriations Bill,\u00a0H.R. 2219<\/a><\/strong>, which will be considered on the House floor tomorrow:\u201cNo funds under the act may be used for activities in contravention of Public Law 104-199, the Defense of Marriage Act.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

As you can see, the\u00a0Foxx-Burton Amendment<\/strong>\u00a0to the Defense Appropriations Bill is clean and simple but all-encompassing.\u00a0The legislation simply\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>expresses the intent of Congress that in all military policies, regulations, programs, and matters involving benefits, funds may not be used for activities in contravention of the Defense of Marriage Act.<\/p>\n

Rep. Foxx \u00a0will offer her amendment on the floor, probably late in the day TOMORROW \u2013 Wednesday, July 6<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
