That\u2019s the conclusion of author Ben Shapiro, who after interviewing hundreds of industry insiders found that many of Hollywood\u2019s most popular shows, including the popular kids program, are inundated with secret political messages. And he got top executives to admit it.<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro\u2019s\u00a0<a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Primetime-Propaganda-True-Hollywood-Story\/dp\/0061934771\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1306856140&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">new book<\/a>, \u201cPrimetime Propaganda: The True Hollywood Story of How the Left Took Over Your TV,\u201d<em> <\/em>according to it\u2019s description \u201cis the story\u2014told in their own words\u2014of how television has been used over the past sixty years by Hollywood writers, producers, actors, and executives to promote their liberal ideals, to push the envelope on social and political issues, and to shape America in their own leftist image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, Shapiro\u00a0<a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlanticwire.com\/entertainment\/2011\/05\/sesame-street-used-spread-secret-political-messages-insiders-admit\/38280\/\" target=\"_blank\">quotes<\/a> Mike Dann, one of Sesame Street\u2019s founding executives, saying it \u201cwas not made for the sophisticated or the middle class.\u201d Using the premise, the team worked in all sorts of messages, including Grover breaking bread with a hippie and Oscar the grouch who was supposed to address \u201cconflicts arising from racial and ethnic diversity.\u201d Dann also admitted he used the program in the wake of 9\/11 to highlight peaceful alternatives to war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSesame Street tried to tackle divorce, tackled \u2018peaceful conflict resolution\u2019 in the aftermath of 9\/11 and had [gay actor] Neil Patrick Harris on the show playing the subtly-named \u2018fairy shoeperson\u2019,\u201d writes Shapiro, according to\u00a0<a title=\"Opens in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/hollywood-accused-rampant-liberal-bias-193304\" target=\"_blank\">THR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The news may not be surprising considering the left\u2018s recent use of the show\u2019s cuddly character, Elmo. The furry, red puppet has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/2011\/05\/primetime-propaganda-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/2011\/05\/primetime-propaganda-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a>used to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/stories\/elmo-internet-czar-fcc-work-to-redistribute-wealth-with-free-broadband\/\" target=\"_blank\">trumpet free internet<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/stories\/elmo-to-mayor-my-mom-lost-her-job\/\" target=\"_blank\">lament job loss<\/a>, and even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/stories\/elmo-plugs-first-ladys-school-nutrition-bill-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">plug<\/a> Michelle Obama\u2019s child nutrition bill.<\/p>\n<p>But the left-wing messages aren\u2018t limited to children\u2019s programs. Adults are inundated, too. The Independent explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The TV series Friends undermined family values; Sesame Street taught ethnic minorities about civil disobedience; Happy Days had a subtle anti-Vietnam subtext; and the 1980s cop show MacGyver tried to persuade pistol-packing Americans that guns are bad.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Happy Days? Friends? Believe it. Shapiro even got Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman to own up to intentionally hiring liberals and sending a strong message to conservatives in a popular episode:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Among Shapiro\u2019s most revelatory interviewees is Marta Kauffman, the co-creator of Friends, who recalls how she hired a \u201cbunch of liberals\u201d to run the programme to \u201cput out there what we believe\u201d. In 1999, she admitted casting the actress sister of Newt Gingrich, the prominent Republican, to play a preacher at a lesbian wedding because she wanted to annoy conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we did the lesbian wedding, we knew there was going to be some flack,\u201d said Kauffman. \u201cI have to say, when we cast Candice Gingrich as the minister of that wedding, there was a bit of a \u2018fu** you\u2019 in it to the right-wing, directly.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So how did Shapiro get these executives to say such things on record. According to him, he took advantage of liberal stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a certain amount of stereotyping on their part in granting the interview,\u201d he told the Independent. \u201cMany probably assumed that with a name like Shapiro and a Harvard Law credential, there was no need to Google me: I would have to be a leftist. In Hollywood, talking to a Jew with a Harvard Law baseball cap is like talking to someone wearing an Obama pin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was shocked by the openness of the Hollywood crowd when it came to admitting anti-conservative discrimination inside the industry,\u201d he told the paper. \u201cThey weren\u2019t ashamed of it.
