(CNSNews.com)<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cJesus: A prophet of Islam\u201d states the provocative tagline in a \u201cpublic awareness\u201d advertising campaign launched by a Muslim group in Australia\u2019s largest city.<\/p>\n

The group, calling itself Mypeace, says its aim is to inform, not offend \u2013 but offend it has, with one Catholic bishop calling the assertion about Jesus \u201ca direct assault on Christian beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roadside billboards in the metropolitan Sydney area carry one of four simple slogans: \u201cJesus: A Prophet of Islam,\u201d \u201cHoly Qur\u2019an: The Final Testament,\u201d \u201cMuhammad: Mercy to Mankind\u201d and \u201cIslam: Got Questions? Get Answers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each banner invites people to get in touch by phone or online, for literature and a free copy of the Qur\u2019an. Mypeace says the ads will stay up for four weeks, and later this year will be run on scores of public buses in the city.<\/p>\n

One of the billboards featuring the Jesus slogan was vandalized a day after it was erected.<\/p>\n

Mypeace says its aim is to \u201caddress the many misconceptions on Islam, to educate fellow Australians on Islam, invite them to ask any questions that they may have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Islamic awareness campaigns are not new, but the slogan referring to Jesus is causing a stir.\u00a0 Muslims and interfaith advocates sometimes invoke Jesus to assert some sort of commonality with Christians, implying that Muslims, too, \u201cbelieve in Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Muslims, and the Qur\u2019an, deny the central Christian beliefs regarding Jesus \u2013 his divinity, crucifixion and resurrection.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere on its Web site, Mypeace states that \u201cthe Qur\u2019an \u2026 repeatedly reminds that Jesus was a human prophet sent by God, not part of God Himself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Australia with its Christian heritage a billboard carrying the statement \u2018Jesus A prophet of Islam\u2019 is provocative and offensive to Christians,\u201d Julian Porteous, auxiliary bishop at the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney, responded in an article.<\/p>\n

\u201cCentral to Christianity is the belief that Jesus Christ is more than a prophet,\u201d he said. \u201cHe is the Son of God. He is acclaimed Lord and Savior of humanity. This statement is a direct assault on Christian beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Porteous said religions should not \u201cset out to antagonize those with differing beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDialogue between the religions can only take place when it is founded in mutual respect. It is not fostered by provocative statements.\u201d<\/p>\n

Porteous urged Mypeace to withdraw the ads.<\/p>\n

Islamic doctrine holds that the 7th century Arabian Mohammed was the last in a long line of prophets of Islam stretching back to Adam, and including Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Jonah, John the Baptist \u2013 and Jesus. (The \u201cGot Questions?\u201d ad in Sydney also describes Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus and Mohammed as \u201cprophets of Islam\u201d.)<\/p>\n

Mypeace did not respond to queries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
