Here are ten ways in which society could be harmed by legalizing same-sex \u201cmarriage.\u201d Most of these effects would become evident only in the long run, but several would occur immediately.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Immediate Effects<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Taxpayers, consumers, and businesses would be forced to subsidize homosexual relationships. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2013\/04\/same-sex-wedding.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24080\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2013\/04\/same-sex-wedding.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a>If same-sex marriage were legalized, <em>all<\/em> employers, public and private, large or small, would be required to offer spousal benefits to homosexual couples. You, as a taxpayer, consumer, or small business owner, would be forced to bear the expense of subsidizing homosexual relationships\u2014including their higher health care costs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Schools would teach that homosexual relationships are identical to heterosexual ones.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A lesbian who teaches 8<sup>th<\/sup> grade sex education in Massachusetts told NPR that she teaches her children how lesbians use \u201ca sex toy\u201d to have intercourse. If anyone objects, she says, \u201cGive me a break. It\u2019s legal now.\u201d One father was <em>jailed<\/em> after protesting because his son\u2014a <em>kindergarten<\/em> student\u2014was given a book about same-sex couples.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Freedom of conscience and religious liberty would be threatened. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Churches and non-profit organizations could be stripped of their tax exemptions and religious psychologists, social workers, and marriage counselors could be denied licensing if they \u201cdiscriminate\u201d against homosexuals. Individual believers who disapprove of homosexual relationships may face a choice at work between forfeiting their freedom of speech and being fired.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Long-Term Effects<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fewer people would marry. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Massachusetts, where same-sex \u201cmarriages\u201d began in May 2004, only 52% of same-sex couples who live together had even bothered to \u201cmarry\u201d by the end of 2006. Among opposite-sex couples, the comparable figure is 91%. In the Netherlands, the figures are even lower, with only 12% of homosexual couples having entered legal civil \u201cmarriages.\u201d Giving the option of same-sex \u201cmarriage\u201d would tell society that marriage in general is \u201coptional,\u201d not normative, and fewer people would marry.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fewer people would remain monogamous and sexually faithful. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2013\/04\/GayKappaWedding400jdh.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24081\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2013\/04\/GayKappaWedding400jdh.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Among homosexual men, sex with multiple partners is tolerated and often expected. One study in the Netherlands showed that homosexual men <em>with a steady partner<\/em> had an average of eight sexual partners per year. If these behaviors are incorporated into what society affirms as \u201cmarriage,\u201d then fidelity among heterosexuals would likely decline as well.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fewer people would remain married for a lifetime. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even a homosexual psychologist has acknowledged that \u201cgay and lesbian couples dissolve their relationships more frequently than heterosexual couples.\u201d The same Dutch study that showed the high rate of homosexual promiscuity also showed that the average homosexual male \u201cpartnership\u201d lasts only 1.5 years. As the transience of homosexual relationships is incorporated in society\u2019s image of \u201cmarriage,\u201d we can expect that fewer heterosexuals would maintain a lifelong commitment as well.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fewer children would be raised by a married mother and father. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Social science has proven clearly that children do best when raised by their own married biological mother and father. Yet legalizing same-sex \u201cmarriage\u201d would put an official stamp of approval on the deliberate creation of permanently motherless or fatherless families. As scholar Stanley Kurtz says, this \u201cwould likely speed us on the way toward<\/p>\n<p>. . . more frequent out-of-wedlock birth, and skyrocketing family dissolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>More children would grow up fatherless.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2013\/04\/fatherless-300x199.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24084\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2013\/04\/fatherless-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a>Most children who live with only one biological parent will live with their mothers, and lesbian couples are more likely to be raising children than homosexual male couples. Therefore, with same-sex \u201cmarriage,\u201d more children would suffer the specific negative consequences of fatherlessness, which include higher rates of youth incarceration among males and adolescent pregnancy among females. Research also shows negative outcomes for the children of sperm donors, who are used by some lesbian couples.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Birth rates would fall. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Same-sex \u201cmarriage\u201d would eliminate the incentive for procreation that is implicit in defining marriage as a male-female union. There is already evidence of at least a correlation between same-sex \u201cmarriage\u201d and low birth and fertility rates, both in the U.S. and abroad. While some people still harbor outdated fears about \u201cover-population,\u201d demographers now understand that declining birth rates harm society.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Demands for legalization of polygamy would grow. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24082\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24082\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2013\/04\/pologmy-wedding-in-South-Africa-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24082 \" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/244\/2013\/04\/pologmy-wedding-in-South-Africa-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24082\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Polygamy wedding in South Africa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If a person\u2019s choice of spouse cannot be limited based on the <em>sex<\/em> of one\u2019s partner, it is hard to see how it could be limited based on the <em>number<\/em> of spouses either.
