America’s public education system is failing. We’re spending more money on education but not getting better results for our children.<\/p>\n

That’s because the machine that runs the K-12 education system isn’t designed to produce better schools. It’s designed to produce more money for unions and more donations for politicians.<\/p>\n

For decades, teachers’ unions have been among our nation’s largest political donors. As Reason Foundation’s Lisa Snell has noted, the National Education Association (NEA) alone spent $40 million on the 2010 election cycle<\/a>. As the country’s largest teachers union, the NEA is only one cog in the infernal machine that robs parents of their tax dollars and students of their futures.<\/p>\n

Students, teachers, parents, and hardworking Americans are all victims of this political machine–a system that takes money out of taxpayers’ wallets and gives it to union bosses, who put it in the pockets of politicians.<\/p>\n

Our kids deserve better.<\/p>\n

From 2010 to 2011, as teachers were being laid off or having their salaries frozen due to strained (or busted) school budgets, NEA Executive Director John Wilson<\/a> saw his pay increase more than $100,000\u2013to a whopping $492,484.00 in total compensation. NEA\u2019s President, Dennis Van Roekel<\/a> wasn\u2019t as fortunate. In 2011, he only brought raked in $460,060.00 in total compensation. These are but two of the executives that run the nation\u2019s largest teachers union. Yet, there are many more at the NEA<\/a> who collect six-figure salaries paid for the dues taken from teachers who are paid by taxpayers.<\/p>\n

America\u2019s education system has become nothing more than a political-public education scheme\u2013a machine, if you will\u2013that is fleecing taxpayers while robbing children of a better education and life.<\/p>\n

For those public-education \u201cgraduates\u201d who may still have trouble with reading comprehension, a new video co-produced by ReasonTV and the Moving Picture Institute brilliantly captures the problem and why it\u2019s time to break the political-education machine.<\/p>\n
