\u201cI have friends who work in that building,\u201d Segal explains. \u201cI\u2019m not going to do something that could embarrass them or that could somehow damage a campaign that is so important. \u2018Be on your best behavior,\u2019 my staff told me.\u2019 I think they know me too well.\u201d<\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t Segal\u2019s first trip to the\u00a0White <\/strong>House<\/strong>, having twice visited during Bill Clinton\u2019s\u00a0gay<\/strong>-friendly tenure. \u201cOne of the things on my bucket list was to dance with my boyfriend at the White House<\/strong><\/strong>,\u201d remarks Segal.\u201dAnd this is the second time I got to do it. We come up to the main foyer, and what do they play? Barbra Streisand. \u2018The Way We Were.\u2019 And I thought,\u00a0Are they going to play nothing but Barbra, Bette and Lady Gaga<\/em>? I was waiting for \u2018Over the Rainbow.\u2019 I mean, this is the Marine band!\u201d Clearly, Segal, a dedicated activist but also an astute political hobnobber, wants to be invited back.<\/p>\n

But his counterparts couldn\u2019t seem to care less. Hart posted his photo on Facebook with the caption, \u201cF**k Reagan.\u201d Strauss simply posted hers without commentary. After all, the murderous facial expression and double-barreled bird-flipping seem to speak for themselves. Comments ranged from \u201cyou<\/strong>\u00a0forgot to add with a chainsaw\u201d on Hart\u2019s \u201cF**k Reagan\u201d note, to my personal favorite, \u201cstar wars \u2026 up yours,\u201d on Strauss\u2019s. …<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, f**k Reagan,\u201d reiterates Hart one week after the reception. \u201cRonald Reagan has blood on his hands. The man was in the White House<\/strong><\/strong> as AIDS exploded, and he was happy to see plenty of\u00a0gay<\/strong>\u00a0men and queer people die. He was a murderous fool, and I have no problem saying so. Don\u2019t invite me back. I don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Last Friday, an attach\u00e9 of important\u00a0gay<\/strong>\u00a0people from\u00a0Philadelphia<\/strong>\u00a0made a trip to Washington D.C. as invited guests of President Barack Obama for the\u00a0White<\/strong>\u00a0House<\/strong>\u2019s first-ever\u00a0gay<\/strong>\u00a0pride reception. There, they danced to the sounds of a Marine Corps band; they dined on crab cakes and canap\u00e9s; they hand-delivered letters from concerned citizens like\u00a0this 18-year old who has had four people close to him gunned down<\/a>, and noted rhyming raconteur\u00a0CA Conrad<\/a>; and some of them took advantage of photo opportunities to give the late President Ronald Reagan the middle finger.<\/p>\n
