Watchwoman:<\/strong><\/span> This isn’t the first time toilets have exploded.\u00a0 Water flowing through a city’s pipe systems is sent at a higher pressure because it often travels long distances. This water needs to be slowed down once it reaches its destination, so a malfunction in the pressure-reducing valve can lead to some messy results.\u00a0\u00a0 It doesn’t have to be a terrorist toilet bomber attack , there can be methane gas in a sewer line and if the plumber is not careful about how he releases the pressure, the contents of that bowl will come up like old faithful! Along with all the other surprising factors.<\/p>\n

On Sept. 27, 2011, a toilet in a federal building exploded and the unfortunate woman sitting on it was injured severely, enough to put her in the hospital. (1)<\/p>\n

On March 6, 2012 at University Of Chicago, students bemoaned dorm conditions:\u00a0 “In a 24-hour period, the plumbing exploded twice, and exploded with such force and severity that a toilet bowl\u2026 shattered, throwing porcelain shards across the bathroom!” (2)<\/p>\n

January 29, 2010 – A woman sued a Chicago rail line for an ‘exploding’ toilet – Crap maintenance alleged<\/span> – The injured woman claims after flushing the toilet aboard the Chicago to Rock Island line, “the contents of the toilet exploded out of the toilet and splattered the plaintiff” resulting in “sustained injuries of a personal and pecuniary nature.” Her suit seeks unspecified damages and court costs from Metra for its alleged failure to repair and replace the toilet.\u00a0 (3)<\/p>\n

A big splash occurred on Monday morning at the House Press Gallery in the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n

No, this wasn\u2019t one of those unexpected guest appearances for celebrities to talk to reporters about some favorite cause.<\/p>\n

This splash came from an exploding urinal. More specifically, something suddenly broke in the piping of the third-floor urinal, and water began spewing from beneath the men\u2019s room door.<\/p>\n

As the water flowed, it first surrounded the Associated Press\u2019s working area, then spread toward both ends of the gallery, which was occupied by fewer than usual reporters and staffers, because the House is out of session until Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Capitol Police officers, gallery staff, and other U.S. Capitol personnel moved to contain the flow. In doing so, they found a use, finally, for the gallery’s stacks of unread newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals, as makeshift sponges and sandbags.<\/p>\n

Employees from the Architect of the Capitol and other Capitol staffers managed to eventually stop the geyser. In came vacuums to suck up the water, and a section of the gallery carpeting was taken up \u2013 leaving behind a sticky floor.<\/p>\n

New carpeting is to be installed in the early morning on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Some concern remained that water may have seeped through the floor toward the Speaker\u2019s Gallery on the second floor, next to the House Chamber. That was still being checked on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n
